Classic look grips

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm expecting a set of 1972 Walter Hagen Ultradyne Red Button irons as my Y.O.B set. They look fantastic and are complete with what look like the original Hagen crested grips but they look hard as hell. Now, I like to use my classic sets and not too precious about how I re-grip them, however, I think these deserve some grips that at least look the part ? Any suggestions ?

I play with some really poor grips if I feel they're a distinctive and original look, these fit that bill so I'd leave them.

We're all different though so do what you feel is right for you.

One other option if you're only going to play them occasionally is to use the tacky over-wrap grips that are available, you'll get the grip and retain the originals.

You could try to sand them. Get a light grit sandpaper and give one a try. If it’s just the top of the grip that has oxidation you may get to some good rubber. It doesn’t look like they are worn, just hard. I’ve done this to older grips before and it’s worked.

Thanks Guys, good suggestions.

after trawling through adoregrips there’s a few options for new, including some brown Superstroke or Winn “leather look” wrap grips or standard black rubber wrap type grips that look the part.

I’m not sure I could play as they are, it reminds me of when I was about 8 using my Dad’s set that had to be gripped within an inch of their life to stop them twisting 😂

Did you find that the grip quickly returned to a tired state after the sanding ?

I remember doing this to eek some life into the old Griprite swingrite but never lasted very long.

I'm not a fan of Winn, they seem to begin to disintegrate within a year...I do prefer Lamkin & some Grip Pride.  However, why not just use a soft bristled brush and mild dish soap to begin with, play them (as Jiggered suggested) til you are no longer comfortable & then regrip....Have fun, no matter what

No, as long as you clean them with soap and water once a month or so they are fine. It’s the oils and dirt from our hands that make them crusty.

I have never felt even the slightest remorse pulling off worn or hard grip, I only care about how the club feels when I play it. I use Mint Grips, which are sold directly for the manufacturer at a fraction of what other grips cost. They feel, and look, just as good as any other tour wrap grip. The other option, although significantly more expensive, is to put on some Gripmaster leather, either the slip on or an underlisting with a strap.

I think golf clubs are for playing and could not care less for originality. Put something on that feels good and don't think twice about it.

About all I can add is

What Stephen said.  🙂

The Mint Grip mentioned here is a good deal...it would be even better if I were in the business of repairing, restoring, or building clubs - I'm just an individual. Still, I'll most definitely consider them when I run out of the sets I bought back when Golfsmith was having their out of business sale discounts...

A second recommendation for the Gripmasters.  I keep and eye out for pulled Gripmasters and now have a 40 or 50 in the cupboard, mostly in near new condition.  They go onto any woods I restore as they tend to feel better than some of the original Victorys I have stocked up on.

Golfworks carries Grip Master underlistings (either standard size or midsize) and the leather strapping that is applied over the underlisting. I put these on a vintage set of Wilson irons and woods for friend. These irons and woods were his father’s. You get the vintage look and feel just like original leather grips from decades ago.

What you can also do (a great tip i saw on here years ago) is get some good cord grips (golf pride or lamkin or whatever you prefer) preferably grips that look simple (no flashy multicolor or loads of logos) and finish them with heat shrink tubing as a collar to get them to look like the old grips.

found the old post by Prsmnstudio:

(https://forums.golfwrx.com/topic/980914-regripping-vintage-clubs/ old thread also included pictures bit they got lost on a recent update of the forum):

While we're on the subject, I'm excited to share with you all a work-around for replacing the elusive Tourney grip. It's not perfect, but I think it works really well. What I mean is, this is a way to put on a new grip, but have it look similar to the original Tourney grip. I have done this on a few of my clubs and am very happy with the end result. Here's what you do:

First, get yourself some GP Tour Velvet cords, or similar black cord grip. I've even experimented with some Medallist grips which are admittedly not as good as the GPs but look the same. I also had a small stash of new end caps and plugs. The long black tubes are shrink sleeves I purchased at Home Depot.

You can remove all the white paint fill in the grips using paint stripper and some elbow grease, toothpicks, etc.

I don't have a picture of this, but you then take a razor knife and cut off the butt end of the grip, right where the cords end. This will allow you to put a plastic end cap in the butt end of the shaft. Next, I trimmed off a piece of the shrink sleeve that is approximately the same length as on the original Tourney grip, slid it over the shaft, then installed the grip in the usual fashion, except with the label pointing down (i.e. facing the back side of the shaft).

Once this is done, you can now take a heat gun and shrink the sleeve until it tightly covers the end of the grip.

Once the grip is in place, you can now install the end cap. These end caps were brand new, so they needed to be sanded and shaped once the epoxy had set. The end cap assembly is three pieces: the cap, a plug which seats the cap, and a plug cover with closes the end of the grip where the plug is inserted.

Once they have been rounded off at the edges and shaped to look original, they can be wiped with acetone to give them a smooth, shiny surface. Here's what they looked like on my set of 693Ts. The main difference, and why this isn't a perfect swap out for the originals, is that they are about two inches shorter than the original Tourney grip (which was quite long by today's standards). But all told, this is a way to get that original look with a brand new grip and not have unsightly labels and whatnot showing. Also, the plastic end cap and shrink sleeve at the bottom make it feel authentic.
