Course suggestions for Philadelphia - Atlantic City region

LucF

Recommended Posts

Are they playable March 14-18 ?
I want to drive down south from Québec to play some courses in the U.S. on March 14-18. Philly is about as far south as I can drive while keeping the drive under 8 hours.

1. Are tracks playable at that time of the year in the region?
2. If so, which ones should I play?

I prefer long (>6900 yards) and challenging tracks that can be walked and have practice facilities. I would like to play 2 different courses twice each. It would be preferable for both courses to be less than 60 miles apart and <100$.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

The weather could be a problem that early in the season. I think that courses in that area usually open between March 15 and April 1. You'll need to call ahead to see who is open and what the conditions are like.

I Don't know about courses around Philly, but there are a lot of nice courses close to one another in southern Jersey:

The following are near Atlantic City:

Sea Oaks

Shore Gate

Blue Heron Pines

Harbor Pines

Sand Barrens

Seaview Marriott

Twisted Dunes

The following are near Philly/Cherry Hill

Scotland Run

Pine Hill

Glen Mills

All of these courses are a challenge and range in length from the tips from 6,600 to 7,300. They all have websites that will give you the details.

All good suggestions, and the closer you get to Atlantic City the better shape the courses should be in since it typically is warmer there.

There is one course left off the list that should be added, Atlantic City Country Club. It may be a little more than you want to play but it is full of history and worth consideration.

As for the weather, anyones guess since we just had a little snow storm dump a few inches the other day. We will get into the 50 range later in the week and it should all be gone.

Note: Most all of these course are resort - high end daily fee courses that will probably charge the same price even if they allow you to walk.

If you take any of Sabram's suggestions, try Twisted Dune. That will be a challenge and a half on a cold March day. Great course, not boring and quite difficult. Shore Gate is another fantastic course near AC. If your playing towards Philly shoot for Scotland Run!

I second Scotland Run, I think you can get on there at the winter rate still. Watch getting too close to the shore it can be hit or miss with the winds this time of year, and it can be down right freezing as the courses tend to be fairly open. Keep an eye on the weather it is going to hit 55* F here on Monday, but that doesn't mean it won't snow, in fact it is snowing right now. Good Luck, if the weather is nice and you are close to the area post it up here maybe you can catch a foursome of WRXrs.

Thank you so much for your help, all.

As per your recommendations, I'm currently thinking of going for Pine Hill on the 21st of March, Scotland Run on the 22nd and 23rd and Twisted Dune on the 24th. I'll be coming down for the Easter weekend finally. Looks like I'll only be able to play Pine Hill one day -- Friday the 21 -- beause they're closed on Mondays for March.

I need to confirm all this and will keep you posted.

Thanks again. Much appreciated.

Hey don't knock my course CD! LOL...

I played Twisted Dunes in January and it was in great shape! No winter tee's or greens.. it is a pretty tough links course, had I putted at all that day I believe I could have broke 80 for the 1st time. Anyways, tough course with the wind and one where you have to know how to scramble..

Scottland Runs is beautiful Quarry course (you'll see if you play it)...

As CD said the courses down the NJ shore are always going to be better to play because it is warmer... Some very nice courses down there and if you can wing it... Atlantic City CC (I think that's the name) it's aton to play but supposed to be an unreal course.

Live in Marlton work in Mt. Laurel, play the MuniKing Indian Springs... hey $30 to walk! LOL

Live in Medford, work in Voorhees.

I drive by Indian Springs almost everyday on the way to work, there are guys heading to the first tee at 7:45 am daily unless snow on the ground.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello all,

Anybody care to join my buddy and I? I reserved tee times for 4 at:

  • Pine Hill on Friday the 21st at noon,
  • Twisted Dune on Saturday at noon.

My buddy plays to approx. 20, 12 for me. He'll play from the white or blue tees and I'll be playing from the back, unless it's really cold. We hardly ever bet. The most I remember we played for was beer after the game. We're driving down from Québec so we'll be there, rain or shine.

If you are interested in joining us, please PM me.

Twisted Dune is a nice test from the tips......especially if the wind is up.

Bump that! Especially if they're playing saturday at noon, the mid day + tide changes will kill you! Just checked the weather and it's going to be great links weather, cold and rainy!

SiD

Looking forward to it. Looks like we'll have something to write home about!

I live in Audubon and work in Pennsauken! There's nothing wrong with Indian Spring at all, except when you want to get out on a nice afternoon and there is a line of 10 carts from the first tee to the parking lot. BTY I might be one of the guys on the course when you pass at 7:45 am cdesana!!

I only wish I had the schedule to get in an early morning 9 holes or more before work.

That's why God invented Cell phones buddy! LOL

Sometimes I take a morning to "take care of personal business" and I'll run over @ 8 play till noon then get to work @ 1. During the week it's quicker thank god, not alot of guys chopping wood if you know what I mean.

Twisted Dune from the tips is close to 7400 yards and is at sea level. Its been a wet week so prepare for a test in length!

I'm off Thursday, too bad.

I save those sort of personal days to play in the local qualifiers. So during the week it looks like I will have to settle for 9 holes after work a couple of times a week.

So Sid, think we should try and put together another South Jersey outing this spring?

100% YES! We had a good time last year, even though I played like I had never picked up a club b4!

I think we'd get a better turnout than 4 from last year! LOL

It drains well though.....it is built on sand and an old trash dump that has been returned to Greenfield status. Friday would be a fun day to play there with the expect 40 mph winds.

I've been told twisted was built on a farm. The 11th hole has a name something like "dixie stallion" because they dug up a horse on that hole during construction. If you know the hole it was found where the green is now.

I could be wrong. I can almost remember the pro telling me that the first time that I played there, but that was a lot of years ago.

Have you also played McCullough's? I believe it's within 10 minutes of Twisted Dune so maybe you are getting the two mixed up?

McCullough's is a decent track, but by no means a great one. 18 is a very good finishing hole though.
