Just wondering if anyone has taken a trip to the NC Sandhills for golf. Excluding the Pinehurst courses can anyone shed some light on the courses, time to go, etc.

You'll get a ton of replies to this and I can honestly say there most likely won't be a bad course in the bunch. I've made annual trips to Pinehurst/Sandhills area every year for the past 7 years or so. Excluding the resort here are some of my favorites.

 

Tobacco Road (in Sanford about 30 minutes north of Pinehurst)

Anderson Creek (in SpringLake about 20 to 30 minutes east)

 

Actually in and around Pinehurst

Mid Pines

Pine Needles

Pine Wild (semi-private but can usually be gotten on)

Talamore

Legacy

The Carolina

 

I'm sure others will give deatiled reviews but those are some of my favorites.

Highly recommend Tobacco Road. I've had some great times out there.

I live in Fayetteville (when I am not in Iraq). I would suggest doing Tobacco Road for sure. Anderson Creek and Bayonet are great tracks too. Wood Lake offers two excellent courses too. One is a Palmer design and the other is a Maples design. Good stuff.

Agree with the Pinewild suggestion. 36 holes, plus a little nine hole par three after for some fun.

The Country Club at Whispering Pines ( the old Pines course ), nearby The Carolina and in Vass

Definitely Recommend Bayonet and Anderson Creek. Great courses!

Ok, I play the Pinehurst courses numerous times so here is ones you need to check out.

 

Tobacco Road- Mike Stanz classic

Southern Pines Elks Club- Donald Ross gem, hardest 6200 yards you will play.

Pine Needles- another Donald Ross layout. Get their early and play the 6 hole loop as a warm-up.

Mid South Club- Arnold Palmer layout that has gone through some ownership changes but the layout and cousre conditions are top notch.

 

Have a great time and be sure to go to the bar at the Pinecrest Inn and have an adult beverage.

I agree with the other posts. I will just add that Pine Needles is an excellent course. They did some major renovations there a few years back, lengthened it a bit. It is an awesome test of golf.

 

Tobacco Road is also a must see (because it is crazy and fun).
