Help Me Shaft My First-Ever Hybrid

Recommended Posts

I have never had problems with long irons, so I vowed never to buy hybrids.  This was way back about twenty-five years ago when Taylor Made released their first Rescue clubs.  Twenty-five years later I still have not yet bought a hybrid, but I do have a project for one.  At the golf course, I found a broken golf club in a trash can beside a tee, so I assume that a golfer was unhappy with his club, so he snapped it over his knee.  I had no intention of using one, so I was about to either leave it in the trash can or sell it.  I may as well give it a try.  It is a Ping i25 hybrid head with 22 degrees of loft.

I pulled the broken shaft and I am left now with this head.  I threw away the old shaft, but I have a tool that measures the tip size.  It appears that the tip size is .370".  I do not use graphite, but instead True Temper Dynamic Gold S300, so I guess I will have to find one with a .370" tip.  Here is the question: if I do shaft it, what should the length of the shaft be?  All my irons are of the old-school lengths and lofts, with the 5 iron at 37.5".  I do not know how long I should trim the shaft after installing a new one.  Remember, I am the guy who has never bought a hybrid before.  Take into account that I prefer the weaker lofts and shorter lengths, so the final length should be consistent with the old-school irons.

I heard the Ping Tour van can bend hybrids but that may not be an option for you.

If the club can't be bent, that means the loft and lie are fixed.  I would calculate the length of club that gives you the proper lie angle for your swing.

Dry assemble the club to figure out how much tip weight, if any, will be needed to get your desired swing weight.

This is how I put together shaft for a Heavenwood.  Then, with that experience, put together a Stealth 7W.

The 40.5" Heavenwood was an inexpensive experiment.  I also like my clubs short, which is why I put together a 38.75" 7W.  The ladies Stealth 7W has a 60 degree lie angle.

Well so far I think the project is working.  I have an old Cleveland 3 iron I never used.  I pulled the shaft and it fits the hosel perfectly.  The shaft was about a 1/4" shorter than what I sought, so I used a discarded shaft to create a shaft extension.  So now the club is 39.5" long and with 22 degrees of loft; a 1-iron length with about a 3-iron loft, so it should equate to a 2-iron distance.  I just turned down the ferrule yesterday and it looks good.  I did not test it yet.

I always thought that the hybrid head that has the same loft as the iron head is simply an inch or two longer than the iron club?

Or maybe, a 3-iron loft (22°) with a 1-iron length (39.5") will result in a 2-iron distance?

For hybrids - 22* is a 4 Hybrid  (3h are more typically 19*).  Remember a hybrid will generally launch higher for a given loft than an iron.

The stock length for that i25 4Hy was 39.75"  - so actually a little longer than a standard length 3i (39").  But to be honest I've never been a fan of the stock hybrid lengths and always cut mine down.   I tend to play my hybrids only about 1/2" longer than the iron it's replacing.
