Help decide: JPX Tour full 7 club set or JPX Forged in 4 and 5 iron?

I really like the ball speed and height of the long irons in the Tour but I am considering using the 4 and 5 iron in the Forged head. Do GolfWRXers think I will gain much in terms of forgiveness in the Forged head in the long irons? I'm thinking of taking them just for long shots in the rough. To be honest, I hit the ball pretty high and straight with long irons. My misses are usually thins or fats. I get a little more ball speed and distance from the Forged but not enough in my opinion to justify using them for gapping purposes.

Does anyone have experience with the Tour or Forged and want to make a recommendation on the forgiveness in the rough? I do hate the left miss and the Forged may mitigate that.

I’m currently playing the 921 tours and think they are pretty forgiving for an iron in this category.  More so than they get credit for.  I went with 225 4i but am also considering a 225 in the 5, but not sure it’s necessary.  All things considering, how many times am I hitting a 5 iron these days, it’s pretty minimal.  However, I hit a 4i quite often as its very versatile.

Not sure how much this helps, but it would be worth a test if you have access.  I don’t have much experience with the forged, but what I do know is the lofts will be quite different so it needs to be considered.  You will get more protection on low strikes with the forged.

Let us know how it goes.

Be careful...not sure how the 923 are but in previous jpx lines the forged were fast but low launching and low spinning. I tried the 900 forged to replace my 900t 4i a couple of years ago and it wasn't a good match. If I wanted low, bulleted 4i that ran out to 245 yards then all was good. But landing and holding a green? Nope.

I like the idea of 225 in the 4i/5i better, but you have to match up lofts.

I ended up in mp20 hmb 4i.

You’ve just got to find the middle of the face with the tours. Off center strikes are going to lose yards, especially off the toe side. But yeah, ball flight on a well struck shot is majestic.

I’m pretty sure I’m gonna jump to a Forged in the 5 iron, but not 100% yet. If I do, I’m bending it 2* weak to blend into the 6 iron in the tour. I’ve only had the tour for a few weeks and do feel like I can learn to hit the 5 comfortably, but I’m also not afraid of a little more forgiveness. I go to a ZX Utility in the 4i, for context.

At that length of shot, I feel like long/short dispersion is a bigger deal to me than left/right dispersion. I don’t want the Forged to go longer. I just want them to not lose too much in terms of distance when I make that occasional low toe miss.

I just sold the 923 Forged 4 iron, 5-pw are in Tour. I find the 5 super easy to hit and looking for the 4 tour now. IMHO, I don’t think the forged was that much of an improvement.

I like the long irons so much in the 923 tour, I might go MP MB 8-pw. I don’t get along with the 9/pw for some reason.

Interesting. Is that because of the top line or the offset? I do like the Tours because the blade length is a little longer. I like mid and short irons that look more iron-like, rather than squat and wedge like. To me the 221s are too compact and wedge like.

Same here.  I really love the blade length on the tours and the fact that the top line is not too thin either.

I feel the forged doesn’t do well in that spot, sure distance is on the table, but for the size, the forgiveness didnt feel right.

Also, I dont know why I don’t get along with the short irons. But I’m always inside heel, got a shallow swing so I know thats an issue…. As goofy as the pw was in the mp5, i didn’t have problems with it though.

Thanks for this. I just prefer the look of the Tour over the forged. Im used to a thinner top line.  I dont worry about gapping at the moment, so the extra 5-10 yards isnt necessary.

I had a set of 921 forged which I will be selling and a set of 923 tours which I am keeping.  I did play around with putting the 5 and 6 forged in my bag with the tours and want to experiment more but I’m traveling through the end of the year with only my tours with me.  But my initial findings were that I prefer keeping tours all the way.  For now

the 5 and 6 forged launch too low and low spin for me, but yes further.  The 6 forged, in particular, is pretty much a 5 tour with slightly shorter shaft.  I can always choke up on my tour 5.  Regarding feel the forged have a heavier, beefier feeling.  They may or may not be to your liking but after I got used to the tours I don’t really like going back to the forged.  I feel the tours are already pretty forgiving.  I can’t really notice a discernible difference between them in that regard but the forged are just stronger lofted really.  It’s possible there is more forgiveness which I am not making use of.

i do have a problem with my tour set where I only hit my 6i 5 yards further then my 7i which is my favorite club to strike.  Rarely I hit the 6i a little further but in average it’s barely beyond the 7i.  So it’s almost pointless to carry it in my bag.  I can use the 5i choked up a bit if i have to.  But also my 5i does not go quite as far as I’d like.  So in theory using the 6 and 5 forged would make sense for gapping  but I really have had problems getting the ball up high with those and too much roll out hard to hit a green with them compared to the tours.  So….  Catch 22.  For now I got a 5h ping which covers my gap above 5i and my 6i is probably a little redundant but it does cover around 175 just a little better then choking up on the 5i.  But 190 is a tough distance for me right now whereas the forged would hit that easily but with more roll out then I’m would prefer.

im going to try mixing the sets a bit more before I sell them

i should also I went to a stiffer shaft with the tours also which have contributed to me liking them better in some way.  Better distance control and dispersion.  The forged in general were just sending everything long and in an inconsistent manner compared to the tours

921 tour and forged isn't a great combo option IMO.

Play a fly-hi in the 4 iron slot and go the tours from 5 on.

This statement makes no sense.

921 tour offers no ballspeed whatsoever.

It's a single piece cvity.

I don’t care for the 923 Forged. But I think the MP18 MMC Fli Hi 4 and 5 are noticeably easier to hit than the 923 Forged anyway and have a smaller head too. The Fli Hi will definitely launch higher than the Tour and offers excellent ball speed retention across the face. You can miss it pretty bad and it still delivers a playable shot with not much distance loss. The Maltby MPF measurements on it are excellent.

Mizuno really has not improved it with later releases. That club basically became the 225 but I like the MP-18 version more.
