Hi-Toe wedge explanation?

Not sure I understand the concept of a hi toe wedge, but think I'm getting a rough idea. The higher toe creates a higher center of gravity. This should result in a lower ball flight. I'm considering a Wilson Hi toe, but they don't have a traditional gap wedge. Would have to opt for a 56d. Mainly for around the green though. For those with experience, will I be able to keep the ball down like my current 53d. ?

I personally don't see any benefit. I've tried them, no noticeable difference for me. YMMV

Hi Toe wedges have grooves across the whole face, the theory is, when opening the club at address, increasing loft, if you strike the ball out on the toe, you are hitting a groove vs the flat smooth edge of a standard wedge design. (not sure how much it changes the COG). Cleveland Golf calls them Full-Face . I play Cleveland wedges and swapped out 54° & 58° wedges for a 56° full face wedge. I can open it up at address for a lob shot result (if I don't skull it) and only have to carry one wedge after my gap wedge. Cleveland makes a full face wedges from 50-60° lofts.

Now for Wilson HT wedges in particular, no direct experience, but yes, you can hit a 56° HT just like your 53°. It should go a little higher and shorter than the 53° but by opening the face you can hit it higher (and shorter).

The goal of hi toe / full groove wedges is to provide a similar sized impact area when the face is in a very open position. The higher COG won’t possibly change the 56’s ball flight enough to mimic a 53 degree club.

 

Wilson’s standard wedge line does include a 52 degree gap wedge. Additionally, while some players seem to have no issue hitting this type of club on full swings, at least as many do.

My experience with the hi-toe wedges are that they are excellent around the green, but consistency falls off really quickly once you start pitching with them 35+

 

Distance and flight became unpredictable for me personally ymmv

I don't know why they work but they just set up so nice for me and I never mishit them.  Best wedges I've ever played.   TM MG3 Hi Toe 50 and 56.  Remind me of old ping eye wedges without the offset and ugly looks but the high toe.  Kind of ugly still but I love em.
