Any drills to keep shoulders from turning excessively??

Hurt my already bad back over the past few months and it's affected my swing.  Now feeling like I'm 'arm swinging' instead of turning correctly, and flipping.  But at the same time feel like my upper body isn't squaring up at impact too.  Almost feel like I'm avoiding certain movements and rotations to prevent further back pain.  Are there any drills to get back to basics and fix my swing and get more square at impact?

I like drills, but I feel like first you have to have some understanding of correct movements of shoulders / torso first, then hips / pelvis, and then wrists if needed.  

 

This understanding of how the shoulders / torso move was a big change in concept for me.  This had a big domino effect in how my lower body and other things were responding.

I had the same question; too much shoulder turn would be more than unusual, bordering on unique.

I wonder if the "too much shoulder turn" is more about starting the swing with a shoulder turn (OTT)?

So not about too much, but more about too early?

Interesting feel. I'd be curious to see what other instructors have to say about this feel. Might experiment at work today.

Your spine extends, tilts, and turns…

 

We have left and right shoulder joints…

 

One might say the “shoulders turn” on a tilted plane…

This is a good drill that might sort things out for you. The lower body engages the upper body.

It's weird how feels work. Just messing around at work with feeling that stretch in the lead side on the downswing I feel like I open easier and I don't feel like I'll top it.

Make some swings by engaging your hands-wrists to initiate the takeaway with an early wrist-set. I expect you'll find that this diminishes your arm swing length-feel while at the same time improves your turn.

Pretty insightful comment - Yes I feel as though I'm coming over the top and then opening the shoulders too much in the downswing.  As I stated in the original comment, due to the bad back it seems I'm doing everything else but engaging my lower body to avoid the pain from my lower back.  So OTT and arm swings are the result.  So I want to 'cover the ball' more, combined with reducing OTT, in order to control my swing better - essentially engage my body before swinging the arms.

The feeling of being an arm swinger works for me.  So I utilize Jack Nicklaus’ image of after his backswing turn,, trying to keep his back to the target as long as possible on his forward swing.  This helps me start down with my arms before turning my shoulders too soon,
