Which Scotty Should I Trade My Tei3 For?

snowmangolf

Recommended Posts

I’ve decided it’s time to move on from my 1997 NP2 Tei3. I’m thinking about throwing feelers out there to see if anyone is interested in trading (for another Scotty).

I prefer a softer feel in a milled putter but at least 340g head weight (preferably 350g).

Based on what I’ve read on here recently, the Studio Stainless or Pro Platinum are two of the better feeling lines ever made. I love how the new Super Select line feels but I’d prefer to game something a little more special/unique.

Personally, I don’t really like the feel/sound of my Tei3. I had really high expectations and planned on gaming it for a long time but something about it just isn’t doing it for me. I’m not sure if it’s the light head or the lack of milling on the face but I think it’s some sort of combination of that.

A Pro Platinum Mil-Spec in 340 or 350 grams is what you want.  They are out there but pricey in good or restored condition or the beaters that need restoration.

I am keying on the special/unique part of this request...

If you want soft and still good looking, see if there is a Circa 62 or Studio Designs that your eyes like - there are many necks and models.  Both are super soft carbon steel - I think that they are soft, at least.  You could get either milled, but my Studio Designs has very light milling on the face.  I feel you on the special/unique, but once all of the deep milling started, stuff got less special and unique without custom work.

The GSS Newports were also soft.  They are kinda fun and unique.

If you like the newer style, then you can find the more recent special editions like the Jet Set or Champs Choice for not too much over retail, if at all.  The all-black Jet Set is unique for Cameron, but every other putter company has one and the style is not unique.

I currently game a Studio Select Laguna 1.5.  The milling makes it softer than some and it has weights.  It is OK.  The only thing that makes it unique is that I put custom paint and a stamp on it and stuff.  I mostly game this over a Studio Designs since I want to keep the Studio Designs looking great since it holds a special place in my heart - if I found a gamer for reasonable money, I would likely game it.

I'm in a similar position.

I'm going to keep my 1997 Newport Tei3, but it's time for it to leave the bag. A 78 with 36 putts this week was the final straw.

I'm very, very interested by a LAB Mezz, the way the face stays square really appeals.

Use the Force Luke. It’s the only way. Seriously.

Years ago I wanted a guitar. Spoke to a fella at the shop and told him I didn’t know where to start. He told me to keep coming back until one talked to me. I said I didn’t know anything about them and he told me that when I picked one that I’d know enough.

Lesson learned.

Spent some time at a place near me today that had a bunch of pre-owned Scotty’s. None of which were in great shape but it gave me the opportunity to try a lot of different models through the years.

I think I’ve narrowed it down to a Studio Select NP2. To me, this one felt the best (compared to Pro Platinum, PP Mil Spec, Studio Design, Circa 62, Select) to me.

I think I’m going to try to find a mint one and pull the trigger on it.

I’ve often heard that advice about selecting a guitar but never to someone who couldn’t play one.

Putter you will like….mmmm hmm.

I love this model. I have a Studio Select and Select. The Studio Select has simple markings and screams workhorse to me. My Select has the deeper milled insert which I’m totally a fan of, but the laid back style of the Studio is classy. The cherry bomb headcover is a little Marty McFly “Back to the Future” ish for me, but there’s plenty of others if it matters to you. Now it’s an “ugly but so pretty” type of thing. Firm feel, solid sound. Almost let it slip away. It’s the Ping Anser 2 Ping wished they’d made.

Yeah, it was interesting. Almost kind of empowering in a way. He said if you like what you see and what you feel, you’re gonna want it in your hands and you’re gonna want to learn. Entry level, but I ended up with a Washburn D-10. Took me awhile but I always liked the way the neck was tapered. Funny thing was after I had it I never liked anything else. Now I can’t play for crap, but my brother is a different story. Needless to say I was a lost cause.

I forgot to ask, but you are OK with the milled face grabbing the ball a bit more?  I have Studio Select, but in Laguna - same milling.  This is probably not a big deal, but the milling can grab the ball and move it a bit, especially on harder putts.  I putt with a slight over spin, so this is no huge deal for me, but it can be for some others.

Have you considered any of the deep-milled 2014 Scotty’s? I’m partial to the Squareback, but all the Newports were deep-milled that year. Softer feel/sound.

IMG_4717.jpeg.5f50a27e545b9d162406324dbd75434d.jpeg

I did have the opportunity to try a few of these out yesterday and I did enjoy the feel/sound but for whatever reason I’m not a fan of how they look.

I was actually thinking of sending the Studio Select out to have a custom face milling done to it to make it a bit more unique/custom to me.  Hopefully that will also solve the potential problem that was mentioned above

Well this wasn’t initially the direction I was planning on going (If I did go with the Studio Select, it would have been a 1.5 or 2.5) but I stumbled across a BRAND NEW 2018 Laguna on Ebay for $375 and decided to pull the trigger. I have always loved how these look at address but have never owned one.

Figured I’d give it a go and could probably get out of it pretty quickly if I don’t like it. I think it’s a fun putter to game and not “just another Newport”

KEEP IT!  Have restored several of these and added a 10 gram brass tipweight inside the shaft and had the face milled.  I'm telling you it makes them feel sooooo much better.

76 with 34 putts for me yesterday….I’ve always been a good putter but right now I’m going through a stretch where every (avoid cussing) putt seems to burn one edge or another.  Speed control is good so very rarely three putt but it seems like nothing over kick in range is going in.🤬

Sell your Scotty and buy a custom.

Pick your headweight, offset, toe hang, lie, loft, length, stamping, face milling/feel etc etc and get exactly what you want.

Probably keep a few bucks in your pocket too.
