Palm Springs: The Classic Club or Silver Rock

Recommended Posts

My vote would be Classic Club. Silver Rock used to be awesome, but it's now under substantial construction from what I hear that is negatively impacting the course. You are already playing my two favorites down there at IW Club. But out of the two you asked about, I would play CC 10 times out of 10.

I played both last week. I would go with Classic Club. The construction at SilverRock is visible, but not overly intrusive. There's no clubhouse, and most of the construction is along the sides of the course. SR is more of a desert layout than CC.

Classic Club is a beautiful piece of property, and the clubhouse is very nice if that's your cup of tea.

Classic Club without question.

Before the "renovation" Silver Rock was our favorite course in the valley.

Now I wouldn't go back there unless it was free and I'd still spend the entire round complaining about how they messed it up.

However I would add that for those that never played it prior to the redo it probably wouldn't seem nearly as bad but compared to before they ruined it in my opinion.

Playing Celebrity & Players at Indian Wells in February.   Four mid-cappers.  Third course is a choice between Classic and Silver Rock.  I would appreciate advice from anyone who has played both.  Thanks in advance.

I've played all of them many times and nearly every public & pvt course in Desert, including all PGA West.  We visit Rancho Mirage 4–5 times a year, just got home, going back during BNP Tournament.

Both IW tracks are good challenges, always in fine shape.  I like the Classic Club much better than Silver Rock, but midday wind can be an ugly factor; tee off early.

Thank you so much for your replies.  Classic it is.

Get there early, when we were there it had a nice range and I think we got some kind of breakfast snack kind of thing, great patio.  Still have the freebies they gave us.  I liked that it seemed more isolated, didn't have the palm tree look and although people go on and on about the wind it was fine the two times I've played it and in the area overall (yes, the occasional and dramatic exception).  In general, wind gets up to even 10 mph out there all the old guys think they are playing in a tornado.

Yo, be careful there. 😜 It's been said I am an ole guy  😧 at the gym.

You got lucky.  The Classic Club is between Thousand Palms and Desert Palms; where wind varies more, especially on that side of 10 frwy.

Haha, there we go!

And age wise I'm not young I guess, but 21 years younger than my dad, lol.

Yes, it varies and can be breezy - but I still chuckle at what causes coffee talk wind concerns for golf in Palm Springs vs. here in the breezy Midwest.

I hear ya.

I was raised in the Midwest on a farm.  Milked cows before school and walked to school in winter.  Here, I wear mostly t-shirts and shorts, even during what Californians call winter.

I miss my visits to my folks out there, but they had to stop going a few years ago.

I loved the area, still do, but not looking for any second homes yet. 😉

I bet you walked 10 miles to school uphill. Both ways. Lol.

My parents grew up on farms in Manitoba 200 miles north of Winnipeg. Can't begin to count the number of stories about walking to school in -20 (F) temps. The stories usually involved having no shoes, but I have a hunch they were exaggerating just a bit.

LOL not that far.

People that know me over the years, have a hard time believing I came from a poor, broken family that lived in a 20x40 trailer then I lived and worked on my grandfathers milk farm.  Started my first job and paying for room-n-board at 14yrs old.  Worked all the way though HS, around sports.  For a few years, during the winter, think we walked 3.5 miles to a country two-room school house, and my winter (below zero) boots were provided by welfare.  Real life for some of us.
