Not your typical golf commute...

A cousin of mine recently got his first hole-in-one on hole # 16 (198 yards) from the south course of the Kau Sai Chau golf complex in Hong Kong.

In order to reach this track (only public track in Hong Kong) which is on a separate island, he has to travel 40 minutes by car, then 20 minutes by ferry boat and finally a 5 minute bus transfer as a one-way route.

I'm amazed at the efforts that he has to go through to play golf. I also consider myself fortunate that I only need to drive 12 minutes to reach my home course at Eisenhower Park or 20 minutes to Bethpage Black.

I'd like to know from the forum if there are other golfers out there who require at least an hour to commute/drive to their home course and/or require other modes of travel to reach their home/favorite course on a regular basis.

Very cool story - talk about commitment! I complain about a 30-45 round trip to play golf, but I must be lucky!

Mine is easy and boring, 5-10 minute drive, depending on the two traffic lights.

At a couple of points in my life I either had to ride a bus or a train to the course. Golf clubs and public transportation are not a fun combo.

Local course is about 20mins away but it is only a small 9 hole course. The nearest 18 hole course is an hour away.

I refuse to play the NY City courses, even though I live 15-30 minutes from a couple. My schedule means I can usually only play on weekends, and THAT is an almost guaranteed 5.5-6 hr round. IF you can get on at all as a single.

I can drive out to a couple of muni courses on Long Island, get out as a single, play in 4 hrs, and be home in less time than a city course fiasco and be less aggravated about it.

If I'm playing with my buddies who live on Long Island, I will drive to their place(s) (45-60 minutes), then they will drive us out to courses further out on Long Island, up to an hour or more away from there.

I live an hour north of Columbus and we have been doing a membership in Johnstown for the last 4 years now. I have a one-hour door-to-door drive each day. To top it off we are generally first out, so 6:30 in prime summer hours.

Then there's this: Many people in Japan and China, spend their whole golf lives on the practice range, never seeing an actual golf course, cause golf is so expensive and difficult to reach.

I'll ride my bike to the local course sometimes if I'm just going to the chipping green. I'll only take a few clubs with me. It's about a 10 minute ride, about the same as driving a car. It's all off the main roads, on a bike path so I avoid all the stupid drivers.

That almost sounds awesome. I love going to the range. I spend more time there than the course easily. I typically go 3-4 times a week during warm weather and winter months I'll hit TopGolf probably 20 times without seeing a live course. I've been 9 times so far since the last time I played in November. The best part is the group is there for an hour, hour-and-a-half, then they all leave and I'll spend the next 2 hours just working on whatever.
