Anyone use more than 14 clubs in non tournament rounds?

I was playing a practice round with a buddy, we were gettting ready for a tournament at the same course, and he was furious with me for having 17 clubs. I just wanted to know which 14 to use in the tournament. I wasn't even keeping score and I hit some mulligans while we were waiting, so it's not like it was a real round. Is there something wrong with this that I don't see?

I don't see anything wrong with it for practice as long as you are not posting the score. I am between 2 drivers, went out saturday with 15 (2 drivers and rest of my set) played 2 balls on some holes ect.

As long as there are not any bets and your just practicing I wouldn't care, I do it when trying to decide what clubs to bring to a tournament.

You must have beaten him that day. I have a friend who does Long Drive competitions and is sponsored by Krank Golf. He usually has about 20 clubs in his bag, most of them drivers with 49” shafts. If there's money on the line you can bet that we count his clubs. Any other day and it's a free for all.

I will play practice rounds w/ two drivers or two putters on a regular bases. I will regularly do this after work when I playing a 6-9 hole practice session. I will not post a score.

the pros have multiple putters, drivers, 3 wood, hybrids, all in a effort to tailor the bag for the course.

 

time to get a new practice round partner!

Wow, not anyone I would enjoy playing with, if I'm not posting or betting (other than $.25 skins with Pop) I may have 3 drivers, 7 wedges and 4 putters I'm experimenting with. If Pop and I are betting he loves it, nobody can really play that well when you're changing things up every hole.

If its a practice round getting a feel for the course then thats fine, but if you are keeping score then its only 14 clubs

I'm sure the tour pros carry more than 14 during their practice rounds, prior to Thursday's opening "real" round.

The LPGA practice rounds I've seen have no restrictions - watched Dottie Pepper hit six chips to the same green and carried more than 14 clubs. I do it when comparing putters woods and wedges with friends.

When playing practice rounds for tournaments, yeah...all the time. Normally it's wedges and/or the hybrid/2-iron thing though. If the conditions are going to be firm and tight, it'll help me decide on the 2-iron if I can hit both on certain holes.

 

Also, since I have about 30 wedges, I'll carry 2 of just about everything. They've all got different sole/bounce and sometimes lofts. Occasionally I may decide I don't need the 60...or the 54.

 

That's going to change though when I go to Scratch. I'll only have 14 clubs, so I'll only be able to carry 14 clubs.

I will a couple of extra wedges in the bag in a practice round mainly to decide between 56 and 60. I will normally take out a 2 iron on the links events but will carry my 5 wood on practice rounds just to make sure. :rolleyes:

I carried 15 clubs all last year, and I'll probably carry 16 clubs this year. I don't bother to take other clubs out of the bag because I don't play in tournaments or for an official handicap. In an average round, I probably only use 11 of my clubs. I play the same course pretty often and there are some yardages that I'm never at.

When I play it's 14. I bring more to practice, but during a real round, I think I'd almost rather have 12. Too many choices can make things too complicated.
