RoverTiger's WITB - bag on a budget

Recommended Posts

I'm a man of modest means, but hey, I still love my golf. After having gotten back into the game with a Nitro set a few years ago following a near 25 year layoff between childhood and more recent times, the task has been one of upgrading my bag to my satisfaction while not breaking the bank.

I went through what I called a soft upgrade of my bag a few months ago (mainly by way of a set of Ram Accubar irons to see how I would get along with graphite across the bag), but now following another change of irons in recent days, I think I now have a setup that I can feel some degree of finality with...until 2025, at least. 😅

Here's what we've got as my preferred lineup:

Driver: TaylorMade R9 460 10.5 (purchased used) - $45

3W: Adams Speedline F11 (purchased used) -  $25

3H: System Golf Icon Plus (purchased used) - $10

4UI: Turner 239 (demo) - $35 (rotating with Ram Accubar 4H or 5H if needed)

Irons (5-PW): Dynacraft Prophet Muscle Blades - $300

Wedges (52, 56, 60): Ram Pro Spin - $85

Putter: old Nitro putter with a DIY Blackburn Rovers paintjob

Grand total: $500

I love a budget bag!  Takes a lot of the stress away and allows you to play pretty free honestly.  Like I always say, whatever it takes to get you out playing is all that matters.

Here you go. It's a slightly imperfect DIY customization in honor of Blackburn Rovers, my favorite English soccer team that has ruined many of my Saturday mornings over the last 22 years of fanhood. 😅

Who are we to judge your bag?  Your bag is totally fine if those clubs makes you happy.  I use old clubs myself (with Ram Wedges) not only because of budgetary reasons, but because golf club tech has plateaued for a very long time and in the hands of a skilled player, will perform just as well as clubs sold now at your local Dick's or Club Champion.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

Fully agree about club tech.

And yeah, I'm really pleased with how my bag has taken shape. It's required a bit more homework and due diligence to cobble together, but that's part of the fun!

Yes.  My current current clubs weren't bought all at once, but rather a few clubs at a time at a steal of a deal over the years (Got my 905R for like $50 CDN, 990s for $100 as an example).   I must have spent $300 CDN at most on all my clubs in my bag.  All of my clubs were bought before the pandemic so those clubs would cost at least twice as much if bought today.

Three days in a row of taking the new irons to the range, and man am I impressed. When user error doesn't get in the way (my bad), well struck balls feel like they stay hit.

Here's a full shot of the seven iron to show off the shaft (Acer Velocity - R) and grip. I thought the shafts would be closer to royal blue than navy, but c'est la vie.

Love the old TM drivers.  I still game a 12* R5

I wish my R9 had a bit more forgiveness, but a ball caught properly with it takes off.
