MOI Matching, My New Rabbit Hole

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I've seen threads going back to 2015 on this, and have learned its been around for a while. I don't see too much discussion on it, so here it goes.

I've been greatly focused on the swing weights for my clubs.. I was so pissed Mizuno had my 923Ts all jacked up in swing weights, and I couldn't figure out why my MP5s were so much better of a fit.. This hit me today after snooping around MGS threads...

When I rebuilt the MP5s, I did a very slight ascending swing weight from 4-PW, because I don't like the idea of chingos of tips weight in the hosel (minimized tip weights best as possible, heads were very well sorted to do this).. When I rebuilt the 923s, I sorted and built a set where 5/6 were D0, 7/8/9 were D1.5, PW was D3.  -- I liked the 5/6/PW, but hated the 7/8/9 (couldn't get off the hosel sometimes and blamed it on the offset).

I now have the blueprint S. Ping did an awesome job.. SW is at D0.5 except for the PW at D1. Strange enough, I checked the tip weights 5-8 have 8gm tip weights, and the 9/PW have a 1-2gm lighter weight respectively.. Anyway, i'm pulling the weights off all and will attempt a to MOI match based on reading Wishon suggesting a 1/2 SW point per iron..

Edit: Not too crazy more I dig. Anyone MOI match with pre-assembled clubs without pulling heads? To start testing, should I go .5 sw delta or the .6 sw delta assuming standard 1/2” shaft stepping.

The calculation is 1.33 points per inch so if you stick with 1/2” between clubs the swing weight change is 1.33x.5=.67 points. 1.33x3/8=.5 points if you go 3/8” between clubs.

Without pulling the heads you can adjust the swing weights with tungsten powder/corks or even lead tape. For the most accurate results do this without grips. You’ll have to figure out what the correct adjustment is for your final desired swing weight with the grips you use. Subtracting 9 points from the ungripped swing weight is a good starting point.

I built my MP-64/MP-4 Combo with ascending swing weights and 3/8ths length differences. I started with 7 iron being my normal playing length. Total weight of each club was 6-7 grams. Still playing the set today.

Driver - JPX 900 9.5
Fairway - Mp 650 15
Irons - MP H4 2-3
- Mp 64 4-7
- Mp 4 8-pw
Wedges -MP T7 54 + 60
Putter - Mp T106

The first question you have to answer is which iron to use as a starting point for the MOI matching.   If you have a "favorite" iron in the sw matched set - that's usually the best place to start.   Remember you still need to find "the best" MOI value to use when matching.   An MOI matched set with a less than ideal MOI value isn't likely to give you the full benefits of MOI matching (no more than a SW matched set with a poor SW value would).   Another way is to take an iron at the bottom of the set (maybe 8 or 9) and go to the range with lead tape and find the best head weight for that iron - and then put it on the sw scale and use that as a starting point.

The second question is (based on that favorite as a starting place) will your raw head weights allow you to achieve the desired increments (both length and SW)?   If the longest iron head is too heavy to get to the desired swing weight for that iron at the current (1/2" increment) playing length - you may have to rethink the length increments or you need to find a way to remove weight from the head (not an easy proposition).

FWIW,  I personally use 1/2 sw pt increments for 1/2" length increments.  No, not exactly SW matching but it makes it easier to get the desired setup at the long end of the set while still keeping the 1/2" length increments.  And it still gives you a "taste" of MOI matching.

Great advice here. Having MOI matched irons on paper might not be best for *you*. Another suggestion is to tune up the shortest and longest iron on the range with a roll of lead tape. Once you do that, measure the length and swing weight of both clubs and use the slope between them to build the rest of the set. (shortest club swing weight - longest club swing weight) / (longest club length - shortest club length) = custom swing weight points per inch.

Thanks all, I appreciate all this.

Like Stuart suggested, I did the ascending SW before, and really worked out and had no idea I was partially moi matching. I’m surprised I never realized this concept. Since selling that set it was almost constantly never happy, so reading more into this and totally makes sense.

I did adjust some irons to test and will look for time to hit the grass range this weekend. Going to also call ping a call about getting some extra weights, put a spreadsheet together on the formula kicking around, so when I pull shafts and spine them, I’ll be ready.

But still, I’m interesting in hearing more about is if this concept worked or not for more on the forum. I wonder if any pros have the tour van building irons like this.

Here is some DIY options to the classic 4/8" between clubs. All of them is "The poor mans MOI Match", with a progression of 1.33 SWP per inch. (thats why its variable club to club, depending on length progression between clubs.)

Its based on a #9 iron with specs that fits us.
