Aim point question or digital level question

I am not an aim point guy but was out using a digital level on a few difficult greens at my course. If it says 1 degree do u go one finger on edge of hole or center of hole. Also is one degree a full ball and 2 degrees two balls. How do you quantify 1-2-3 even four degrees. Also if it is less than a degree does that always mean inside the hole.  What I did find was my course has a lot of ridges and greens are much flatter than i thought. Thannks

I recommend you take an AimPoint class (and make sure your level measures in % slope, not just degrees…).

You can get those questions answered and more.

As stated, set your level to % not degrees.  Your other questions would take too long to answer here.  If there are no aim point classes available in your area, the aim point express tutorial you can buy on line is a good start to using this system.  I’ve been using aim point express for several years and it has really improved my greens reading.  I do most of my putting prep while others are putting and it doesn’t slow my rounds at all.  There is some individualization needed as people have different sized hands and sense slope a little differently.  But once you get used to using it the system is very accurate.  It’s especially useful on courses were you are unfamiliar with the greens.

For real, I cant recommend this enough. Even if its an hour class - its worth it. Years ago the instructor that came by our club was amazing and ended up being my actual coach for a while.

Like anything else in golf or golf instruction - AP is not going to be for everyone. But the best way to find out is to try it.

I purchased the video, then played approx 50 non-competitive wintertime rounds before taking a lesson with a certified AimPoint instructor.  I can’t recommend the in-person lesson highly enough.

I’m glad I did it the way I did, BUT given a choice between either the video or the in-person lesson, I’d opt for in-person, no question. And there have been some refinements to AimPoint since the video was made.

I do think there might be value in using a digital level set to percent immediately just to get a feel for percent of slope.  And that is MUCH easier and faster than most people realize.

From memory, from the DVD, at short lengths you use the center of the hole, and everything else uses the high edge of the hole.  But I don't remember the distance where that changes.  I use the edge but I have been over-borrowing on some shorter putts.  I need to go back and find or figure out where to switch to the center of the hole.

Also bear in mind that the closer to your face you hold your fingers, the bigger of a break you are seeing.  And the opposite too, of course.  At some point the user has to do what works for him or her.

AimPoint has come a ways since the DVD. I started there too, but instructors are regularly updated as new info comes out. I would recommend a lesson as well. I don't think it's great to just divulge the entire method in an internet forum but as an example, for short putts, AimPoint is no longer recommending using the finger method and just using visual references to the cup for better accuracy.

It might also be worth checking out Tour Read by Ralph Bauer. Some may prefer that over using their fingers, but the idea is generally the same.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
