Cool quote from the article -

"I've always told the guy at Nike, build me a ball that spins and it'll be my responsibility to take it off," he said. "I'll hit more club. I'll do something to take that spin off. But I want to be able to be aggressive around the greens."

Some might ask what the point is... to answer that question, the point isn't that we can all go out and buy Tiger's ball. There is a long standing debate about tour equipment and retail equipment. At one point, Nike was on the ropes because it came out that the ball you and I could buy and the one that Tiger played were not the same ball, contrary to Nike's claims and advertising.

Now, we have at least put that question to rest.

Nike has stated that you need to swing like Tiger to get the ball to work properly. I wonder how true that is.....

I can't play the Platinum. It spins for me, but I can't get any distance out of the ball. The Black does the trick for me... not as much spin, but more than enough and I can get decent distance with the ball.

Just to play devil advocate why doesn't he just go back to his old Titleist ball if he can take the spin off? Please go to the 1:00 minute mark before the obvious response.

Cool video. Think I might have to put a 5w back in the bag...seriously.

But as to your question, he answers it a couple of times in that video. Not only do the new balls go further, he hits can do more with the 5w than the 2i and the 5w goes further. :)

His ball is SLIGHTLY softer. 2 or 3 points softer (can't remember the exact term for the scale).

Come on! Did you read the article???

Here is the pertinent text:

"Tiger Woods has played the Nike One Platinum golf ball since 2000 and through at least a couple of different incarnations. At the CA Championship, he confirmed that for the first time, he's playing the model that's available on the shelf to anyone."

I know guys that work at Nike in the GOLF BALL PRODUCTION DIVISION... I am not speculating.

Yep, after all these years, Nike felt they needed Tiger to come out and lie and say he was using the retail One Platinum this year.

It doesn't make any sense. This was never a marketing or sales issue before. There is no reason for Nike to have Tiger lie now. Most golfers didn't even know that Tiger used a different One Platinum than they could get. This "revelation" could do as much harm as it does good.

Ha Ha... you're kidding, right?

Woods + Nike One = double digit wins all over the world in every imaginable condition

(rain, wind, calm, freezing cold, sweltering heat, sun, fog, night, day, desert, mountains, swamps....)

Its not the ball, its the player.

His ball is SLIGHTLY softer. 2 or 3 points softer (can't remember the exact term for the scale).

His old ball was 2 or 3 points softer.

A few years ago Nike got their privates in a wringer over the question of whether Tiger plays the same ball you and I can buy. He didn't, he played a slightly different prototype (slightly softer cover) but Nike's advertising was telling people they could play Tiger's ball. Nike even released a TW ball in limited numbers afterwards.

After that episode, all of Nike's advertising had a small disclaimer stating that Tiger played a Prototype Platinum ball.

That disclaimer is now missing from their ads and Tiger has publicly stated that he is playing the same ball that is on shelves.

I find that history pretty telling, and it is very unlikely Nike would put themselves in the position of being publicly embarrassed over this a second time.

Very cool!! Now it's time for us to make the Nike One Platinum the best selling ball on the market. If we are all looking for tour issue equipment, why not play the ball the future "best player ever" is playing!!!!!!

:)

You are not tiger, I am not tiger, no one on this forum that I know of is tiger. Infact we couldnt carry tigers golf bag, tie or shine his shoes, be his butler, serve him dinner, we are the last people on this planet that should be using a product just because tiger uses it, simply because we suck majorly when it comes to comparing ourselfs versus the greatest player maybe ever.

You want to figure out what ball is best then figure out the avg of each winner in every tournament in the world over the last 5 years or so, and see which ball wins most. Odds are its the prov1, but thats just my guess.

I would use nike but i would never use nike just because tiger uses it, I use whats right for me and no one else, not even the greatest player in the game because quite frankly ill never ever ever everrrrrrr be even remotely close to him.

I don't want to burst your bubble, but even if it turns out to be the ProV series, that wouldn't prove a thing.

Guys,

Why the personal attacks at each other? What do you gain or what do you add to the thread?

Okay, now I'll be blunt.......on the other hand, why some of the "stupid" comments? Please think before you post. If you have an opinion or something factual to add, great. However, if all you have is an uniformed and speculative jab, please refrain, because that's what typically solicits ridicule. Also, let's stick to the topic because the direction this has taken, twice, is exactly why these are closed.

Have fun but be respectful.

I heard this at a dinner where Tiger was speaking and I was lucky enough to attend. And, given the legal stuff surrounding the Pro V, I decided to give this ball a run to start the season. My swingspeed is typically 110-112 with the driver, and this ball is not right for me at all. I loved it off the irons, great to chip with and rolls nice on the greens BUT it dropped out of the sky off the tee for me... Nike is not kidding when you need to play like Tiger to make it work...

Me too. Same results, really. To be fair, I only played this ball on a short trip to FLA (where the ground was a little bit soggy). I loved the NOP around the greens and off the irons, but I spun it back off the driver 3' back and 3' left on every landing. This was also off of a high-spinning-for-me D2 driver, and I've since switched to the Burner TP, so I'm going to give this ball another shot with the lower-spinning head.

Great feeling ball. Just awesome. Stopping it with my Spin Milled on the green was almost magical.

Sorry. What I meant to say was, "Since when does whether a ball was used by one tournament winner equate to what an awesome ball it is?"

Like many others, I find the NOP just goes...NOWHERE...off the tee. I'm already distance challenged. The NOB is, for me, a much better combo - still plenty of spin around the greens with good distance off the tee.
