LOrena Ochoa's swing

Honestly I hate her finish and head movement. I know she is a great player, and don't get me wrong, her finish makes her no less of a player. Also, her putting stroke is quite strange as well. She moves her head back mid-way through the stroke.

I'm guessing the double **** finish is for balance, but does anyone know for sure. And I can't imagine what any movement could do for putting.

Please tell me I'm not the only one...

Her mannerisms are a little off kilter, but to be honest I have seen many a professional golfer in my day with mannerisms that are equally as awkward. Remember it is not about how but about how many.

She is obviously an amazing player and despite her less than appealing action according to you, she is doing amazing things. Makes you wonder if textbook, or pretty is all that it is cut up to be??? She is doing well with what she has, and in my experience the people that had the repeatable awkward action were the ones to look out for, not the ones the looked pretty on the range.....

My friend once said "If you find your golf buddy developed really weird looking swing but he plays really consistent, you can tell he lost his job", which means he has had plenty of time to practice that weird-looking swing quite a lot.

So, pro golfers have more than enough time to make any kind of swing consistent, and then if he/she has talent to repeat it again and again, then he/she is a dominating golfer.

Simply how good their swing looks doesn't matter.

But, IMHO, for weekend golfers who cannot afford time more than once of range practice and 18-hole round, they need to know what kind of swing will produce repeatability, and I think better-looking scientifically-proven swings are something they should seek after.

i was watching the LPGA coverage last night, and i have to agree with you, the whole pump at the finsih is very annoying to me... no idea why, it just is...

it's funny though, we just had a thread recently on the annoyance of all the cookie cutter swings on tour, and now we have a thread complaining about a personalized swing too...

just goes to show, we're never happy... :clapping:

not to mention that her backswing cross way over the line at the top too...

Her head thing during the putt is something she's worked on to try and reduce and not even she knows why she does it.

As for her swing, is there really any good way to argue that her swing is "wrong"? I mean she's pretty much dominating the LPGA the way Tiger does the PGA. And it's not like she's getting a lucky bounce- she just does what feels natural to her and plays better golf than most of us here will ever be capable of.

My take on why her swing looks a little unusual is that she is quite a small person and to hit the ball as far as she does, she's got to do something to gain some leverage and speed.

I will say, in contrast to this, look at Annika's swing, it looks really effortless. I think that is why Annika has been consistently at or near the top for so many years. She keeps things really simple. A minimum of moving parts. But Annika is a little bigger and stronger than Lorena.

I agree with the comment someone made above, for most of us amateurs, we really need to keep things as simple and in balance as we can, since most of us do not have time to practice as often as we would like.

Some people just have quirks I think Speedy. It doesn't necessarily mean her swing is mechanically inefficient and only works because of great timing and lots of practice.

I mean.......I can't even RELATE to her head droop and her "across the line" top of swing position. But I can't relate to a lot of golf swing things that world-class and Hall Of Fame golfers do. And there's things I do that other people can't relate to. For me though these things just "happen." Yet the club continues to work like a club...

I've tried to change these things BTW...........absolutely zero success thufar. And I am very thorough. Almost manically.

I bet it would be counter-productive to try and FORCE a change in her head droop..........or Trevino's arched wrist...........Sergio's delay/angle................etc. etc.

The only thing the ball knows is what the club is doing.

That's not to say you ignore everything else.

It's just to say that there is more than one way to do it.

About the short game: watching the ESPN2 coverage for about 5 minutes today, it had a camera on Lorena and Annika on the practice green. Annika putting, and Lorena chipping.

I saw Lorena duff two chips right in a row, that just barely trickled through the fringe, when she was 5 feet into the rough. It really looked like some 20 handicapper at my local club, trying to get the ball to the hole (maybe the rough is very sticky there?) Totally irrelavent, as her short game has been unbelievable lately, but just wondering if anyone else saw this?

Lorena has a classic two plane golf swing.

I am actually trying to copy it in my own game (not the unique mannerisms).

She crosses the line a bit at the top which is fine for a two planer.

She hits it long and straight shuttling the club from above with her lower body.

She gets a lot of power from the engine of her arms.

The spine angle raising adds width to her swing, which is good for her high-handed, natural action.

I love her swing and she seems like one of the best people in sports.

Rock on

The head tilt from the top puts her spine in a great angle to rotate around. I think it is key to her golf swing.

I don't mind Lorena's head bob triple pump. What makes me cringe is the Creamer and Gulbis dippety-do.

OUCH!

You talking about Creamer/Gulbis swing? Wow that needs another thread.

Just a quick question not to thread-jack from OP, what's all about two sexy ladies' strange head dipping? Is it to upper-blow the ball?

Knudson said head movement is mostly irrelevant, you should try to keep a light head and what it does, it does. Consciously keeping your head still introduces tension in your body which hurts your fluid movement. Head movement can happen without spine angle movement. Obviously a lot of successful pros move their head, so keeping your head still is not be as important as many think it is. It`s how consistent you bring the clubhead through the ball that counts.

I honestly believe her (full swing) head movement is an attempt to keep the feeling of "back to the target" for a longer period of time at the top. That concept can help juniors and amateurs from coming over the top too quick with the upper body. She likely was told that as a junior and never really stopped doing it.
