Master Club Maker

What is it?

Are there different certifications that club makers have? I have a guy who works on my clubs but not sure if he is a master club maker. Can anyone help explain?

It's best to get some word of mouth when choosing a guy.

 

I've been doing club work for 15 years now, have taken some training courses, have a good library of older and new equipment, specs, etc, but most importantly I have simply been doing it for 15 years!!

 

It's good to find a more "modern" club maker if you want some bells and whistles to your fitting or repair, it just depends what type of work you are looking to get done.

 

There are thousands of great club makers out there, and not all or even most of them have any type of real certification. It looks good on a wall and may bring in some more business, but it's like the old saying goes, "you either know what you are doing or you dont".

 

Ask around your local courses, driving ranges, etc. Maybe see some of his or her work first, check out their shop to see they have the right tools for the job and that they dont just simply cut and glue as well.

Come companies offer "titles" for their dealers based on sales levels as well...

For me.... if you get your PCS master clubmaker cert then you did it the old fashion way.. you earned it! This isn't just handed out for sales.

Currently the PCS is the only independent clubmaking organization out there.

 

All others are privately held by a specific company, and either exist in part to promote that company's products or are in themselves a product.

 

Though the PCS has gone through some very difficult financial times of late, many of us believe it's worth saving and are spending time, energy and money to keep it viable and independent as well.

 

Time will tell if this works or not...

Just wondering if there was an actual certification to be deemed a "master club maker" and if I read correctly, it is through PCS. Correct?

The PCS does not have a title of Master Clubmaker.

 

PCS Certifications are:

 

PCS Certified Class A Clubmaker

PCS Certified Class A Club Fitter

PCS Certified Class A Club Repairer

 

When one holds 2 (depending on which 2) of the 3 they can use the title:

 

PCS Professional Class A Clubmaker or PCS Professional Class A Club Fitter and I am not sure this was ever "officially" sanctioned.

Certification is a good start, but won't guaranty to know what he is doing 100%.

 

A lot of it is depending on their skill handling tools and understanding the technical issue on golf club construction, materials, etc.

 

To master it is something that is not come over night, IMPOSSIBLE!. Lots of dedication and trial & error on willing to learn and keep up with this industry. Not to mention talent & creativity are the other key elements to become one IMO. Lots of time they are good on theory and practically are totally the opposite, vice versa.

 

If their mind is stuck by the book only, you won't go forward to the future and your eyes are blind with what the book says only.

 

If you can find one that understand swing mechanics too, You'll be amaze on how good that guy can be. RARE BREED IMO! :cheesy: Especially if he is a people person also. :cheesy: :good:
