Only just registered tonight, but been a long-time lurker in this thread, massive Faldo fan (same birthday, only in 1984!). Sorry if I'm taking it off-topic, but does anybody else feel that the 1993 Open Championship is overlooked in terms of how it may or may not have affected Faldo's career?

He was at or near the top of his game, if he had won it would have been a third Open in four years and a fourth in seven, but instead it proved to be the only time (as far as I know) that he led a major after 54 holes and didn't win. Despite this, Dale Concannon's book gives the tournament less than a page, while Life Swings has about a page and a half but is of the 'Greg played great and what could I do?' view (and there's no doubt that Norman's final round was one of the best ever, even if he's regarded as a choker by all and sundry).

Just wondering what anybody else thinks?
I think in his '94 book 'in search of perfection' faldo says he lost the tournament with his 3rd round of 70 (level par). He explained the pins were in tough positions and he just didn't hole anything unlike in '92 when he broke 30 putts for the first 3 rounds.
But he was still in a share of the lead (with Pavin I think?) after round 3, surely he'd still have been expecting to win, especially as nobody would expect a final-day charge from Norman.

Like Iggy I think he'd have been in contention more if he'd won in 93, the 96 Masters was an aberration really in terms of post 92. Trap Junior's point is a very valid one!

Great stuff on the thread and how I miss the end of season tournament from Wentworth. Autumnal golf at it's finest.

Paul I have another photo challenge for you. And it's one I think may be up there with Faldo wielding a Zebra.

Right. I read in one of his books of Sir Nick playing a set of Ping Eye 2s and shooting a very low score with them. And from memory he then told his manager he couldn't play them because he hit them too straight.

Do any pics exist of the great man wielding the Pings??? Very tough ask I know.

Thanks for all the great clips on this thread in the meantime.

Thanks Jebb, you know what mate I read the same statement but have never seen a photo as I guess this was only for one round at a single event therefore the possibility of a photo coming up are slim but I will certainly keep my eyes peeled !!! :D

I think it might be an assignment too far lol.

I'd have loved to have seen a pic of Faldo mid-rebuild and in his pomp of playing blades clutching the Pings. I'd also love to see what his swing looked like just before he started re-building it aswell so I guess that would be say 1984/85 seasons.

I'll look out for clips! Keep up the good work guys!

I seem to recall seeing him use them at an event in the UK - Wentworth or Woburn?

I thought it was Sunningdale. There was a program with a golf magazine where he goes hole by hole through his 62. I can't believe I lost it!
Could be. In the '94 Shell match against Norman, Faldo is credited with the course record of 62.

Faldo still has the course record at Sunningdale old course with 62.

Faldo was using TP-19's in the 1994 Shell's Wonderful World of Golf but he actually shot the course record 62 in the 1986 European Open which is possibly the time that he was using the Ping Eye 2's although Woburn also rings a bell !?

Yes, he didn't play very well that day. In the profile of the course, he was credited as holding the course record of 62. Glad to see that it still stands!

I have the book "in search of perfection" and in it Mr. Faldo says " In 1986 after a couple of years out of the limelight and a previous club deal having gone by the board, Karsten Solheim's Ping company was looking to get me interested in playing with their clubs. A set was sent over in the summer of that year and I tried them out in the European Open at Sunningdale - and went round in 62. After the way I had been playing, John came down eager to make the deal, but I don't know what he must of thought when I said, "I'm sorry John, these won't do, the ball goes too straight!"

Sorry so long, fan of Faldo and this thread, I have a couple books, and videos of his.

 • 2 weeks later...

Not been on here for ages but what a great thread.

Just back from Portugal and played the Faldo course which has to be my fave courses ever, we played of the tips and it was blowing, brutal. Some great design with run offs and false fronts like I have never seen. Stunning location and course spans a huge area, some great views. If your near Faro you must play this course.

How much was it? Better than San Lorenzo? (an absolute gem)

They need to start being more realistic with the prices for rounds in Portugal, the economy is shagged but yet they still charge way over odds for golf, and the courses are deadly quiet.

Not sure exactly as it was part of a package but circa E130, cant compare to San Lorenzo as its the only 1 I havent played. it was fairly busy when we were there so I guess things are picking up.....
