snuck onto a course?
NO not to play an entire round.

And to start i never have nor do i advocate sneaking onto the course.

But i live right on the golf course and one of the holes runs right behind our backyard. Sometimes i have been tempted in the evenings to just go out to the green and practice some chipping and putting. But i haven't because one i don't want to get in trouble and two i don't want any bad karma to come back to me when i'm really playing by doing something i shouldn't(yea i know, stupid but i believe in karma).

Anyways, have you?
What did you do?(putt, chip, play a couple holes)
Get caught?

Yes, probably a half dozen times. Most of the time it was just to play 2 to 3 holes. I do remember one time when I was in college on a Monday getting carried away. We made it all the way down the a par 3 that was in front of the pro shop. One of the assistants came out and said " you guys have big **&*^ to be out here." we were in the car and outta there. I think most people have bootlegged a little golf and probably wouldn't admit it.

When I was 12 years old I lived across the street from Sunnyside CC in Waterloo, IA. I'd sneak on and fish the ponds all the time. They were so full of blue gill, crappie, smallmouth bass and bullheads that you'd get a strike withing seconds of casting almost every time. The Golfers were cool about it but the Management wasn't. Snuck on once after delivering the Sunday papers and played a couple of holes. That was the summer my friends introduced me to golf. Unfortunately I moved away the next summer and didn't play again 'till I was around 20.

Did it once with a buddy of mine when we were 18 years old. I remember it because it was the Monday Hale Irwin beat Mike Donald at the U.S.Open. Basically, the last three holes at this course were 3 short par 3's in a row. They were right next to the parking lot and in between the parking lot and the 16th hole was the putting green. My buddy and I putted around for awhile (we played this course regularly) and then, for some reason, when no groups were coming through, decided to play those 3 holes. As we're putting out on 18, the guy from the pro shop comes hauling a** down to the green screaming at us wanting to know what time we teed off, where were our receipts etc. We told him we paid a woman in the pro shop and threw our receipts out because we didn't think we'd need them. His exact quote was "Wait here until I get back." I've never moved so fast in my life. We we're off the course, in our car and looking in the rear view mirror the entire way home expecting the cops to pull us over. I guess 18 years later, it's somewhat amusing, but at the time, I felt horrible. Never did it again.

I didn't really sneak on as much as I didn't get a chance to pay. There is a tight little 9 hole course around me thats about 3300 yards long and in the late fall/early winter they only have one person running the entire show everyday. The rule is you go out, and when you see them on the course doing whatever it is they are doing you pay them. Well, after 9 holes I did not see them and just left.

I never have and would consider it both stealing and tresspassing. However, one of my favorite golf stories of all time is about sneaking on to a course that now happens to be where I normally play. If you've never heard the "Glory Game at Goat Hills", read the link below. It was written by the greatest golf writer (and arguably sportswriter) of all time, Dan Jenkins. It's a semi-true story.

yep. two days ago. course I play has a ten dollar special after 6:30 in the summer. Went over to pay my green fee and no starter. Hang around for ten minutes, precious seconds ticking by. Couldn't wait any longer, so I teed off. I guess technically that's not "sneaking," but I did hurry off the first tee a bit faster than I would ordinarily. Got 9 holes too.

I did it once. A buddy of mine lived a street or two over from the backside of a course. One day, when the weather was bad we snuck on and played a six hole loop and then left. With the weather being overcast/drizzly, there wasn't anyone on the course, so no, we didn't get caught. I have never, and will never do it again though. I played this same course a couple weeks ago, paid for 9 and was tempted to sneak in a couple extra holes, but didn't do it.

GolfPunk magazine do a series of quickfire questions for Pro's each month and this is always asked. I can't think of anyone that's said no!

I used to live round the corner from a municipal golf club and during the light summer evenings, I often used to climb over the fences. The 6th hole was nearest my house so I knew that anyone playing a round would've probably played through there at that time (8-9pm ish). Normally took a wedge and a putter and spent an hour or so on and around the green.

When I was 10 or 11 we had a big field across from us and as kids we made our own little course but lacked the luster of a true course. Just down the street a few blocks was a nice private course without a fence just begging us to sneak on, we did, successfully for a few days I might add. Also we were very concious to replace any divots and rake any traps we were in and would also fix our ball marks, we did this as to not leave a trail and we did know better as well. We did get caught and the problem was that this private course was heavily mafia orientated. One of the guys that caught us I seen on the news, so needless to say we were scared. He screamed and told us to get out and never come back. But after a few days we could'nt resist and went back. We got caught again and now this guy was P.O.'d. He and his partner grabed us and brought us back to the clubhouse into the back of the proshop and made us sit there, "until the cops come" he said. We were scared to death at this point cause he left us in this back room for what seemed to be hours but was more like 20 minutes. He finally came back and gave us this story that the police are too busy and to let us go, but he also said he would break our arms with the baseball bat he was holding and then told us to get out for the last time.

After a few weeks we went back, not to play but to get balls out of the ponds. Low and behold here comes this guy again. We had about 75 or 80 balls and now we were crapping our pants, but atleast we were'nt playing. He came over and asked us what the hell are you doing now? We showed him the balls we got out of the pond and he just sat and stared at us and the balls for a while. He then started to laugh and told us we had balls to come back out on the course again, but was happy we were not out playing, and that we were staying out of the golfers way. He made us an offer, we can come out and play 18 holes twice a week but only if we brought in all the balls we fished out of the ponds and creek, or we could sell the balls but can't play, either way it was a win win for us. So we brought in the balls and played twice a week, at certain times of course, usually early morning Mondays and Wednesdays. It was only later that year that guy got sent to prison, which ended our playing.

Sorry for the dragged out story, just started writting it as I remembered it.

Yes! As a Jr. Golfer (in the mid-late 1970s) I used to sneak on to Pebble Beach (it was empty a lot of afternoons back then) with several other guys (quite a few of whom later played on the PGA tour!). We also used to go over to Number 16 at Cypress Point (course again was usually empty) and hit balls across the Pacific.

Was great fun. A couple of assistants even knew we were doing it at PB, they didn't care at all. Cypress was strictly sneaking (hehe).

Would I do it again today? No. Would I want my kids doing it? No. Was it a lot of fun and great memories from my youth? You bet.
