Trying to get things right - loft setup advice needed :)

Correct loft setup throughout my bag - I need a bit of advice
I'm trying to fit a new 3 wedge setup into my bag - and will probably order a combo set of the new Mizuno Mp-52 (4-5-6) and Mp-62 (7-8-9) and a trio of custom made Tour Department Scratch wedges.......

So far my planned lofts throughout my set looks like this:

1. Driver 10.5°
2. 3 Wood 14.5°
3. 5 Wood 17.5°
4. Hybrid wood 20°

5. 4 Iron Mp-52 24°
6. 5 Iron Mp-52 28°
7. 6 Iron Mp-52 32°
8. 7 Iron Mp-62 36°
9. 8 Iron Mp-62 40°
10. 9 Iron Mp-62 44°

11. PW Scratch TD 48°
12. SW Scratch TD 54°
13. LW Scratch TD 60°

14. Putter 03°

I have 4° laps between clubs from my hybrid wood and up to my PW.
Only concern I have is the 6° jump from PW to SW and from SW to LW.

Anyone have similar loft setup in their bag and can comment on how it works out for them ?
I normally use 1/3, 2/3 and full soft pitch shots with my wedges, so don't think the 6° gap would be a big problem here, but have never tested it in real life.
I come from a 4 wedge setup, that worked fine - but didn't use the 52° GW that much, and if Scratch will make me a great PW instead of the often clumsy looking PW from standard sets, I don't think I'll miss the GW that much as long as I make sure the PW is 48° loft and the 9 iron is 44°.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated :)

The only advice I can give is in regards to the wedges. My wedges have a 6* gap as well and I'm fine. As you mentioned, there isn't much of a difference. The 6* gap is extremely playable and I've got no problems. Sorry ;) .. that isn't much of a help.

Still better than nothing :)

No one in here have the same loft progression throughout their sets, I guess black%20eye.gif

Instead of looking at lofts, how are your distance gaps? I'd suggest writing down your yardages for each club and see what your gaps are. I found that I only had a ~5 yard gap between my 4 and 5 irons, for whatever reason. So, I dropped the 5 iron, and added an extra wedge. Dave Pelz has some good commentary in his "bible" books if you want more info.

I use 48, 54, and 60 degree wedges. I've been playing this setup for the past 6 years and really like it. I sometimes toy around with weakening all my lofts so I have 50, 56, and 60 degree wedges, but thats only because as of late I've been hitting my 48* around 140 and my 54* around 115 which leaves me with quite a gap to fill, especially since I'm not a big fan of full swings with wedges.

As long as the you don't have too large of distance gaps I think you'll really enjoy that wedge setup.

Another idea would be a slight tweak to 53° and 59° in case the 6° gaps are freaking you out.

Personally, I find your 3 wood, 5 wood, Hybrid to be a little stacked up on the long game end. I would prefer to see a 15.5 to 16.5° 3/4 wood, the 20° hybrid, then back to 4 wedges. The biggest problem with my opinion is that it tends to change every time I play! :)

As I said, it's only my planned setup - things can easily change. Just trying to figure out what to go for.

I'm also thinking about dropping the 4 iron, making the 5 iron stronger from 27° loft to 25° and then have 4° gaps all the way through the set and continue with my 4 wedge setup :) .......can't make up my mind, that's why I'm looking for help and inspiration in here :beach:

Something like this:

1. Driver 10.5° - TM Tour Burner Tp

2. 3 Wood 14.5° - TM Tour Burner Tp

3. 5 Wood 17.5° - TM Tour Burner Tp

4. Hybrid wood 21° - To be decided (Titleist 909, Adams Idea Pro Gold, TM Tour Burner Rescue or Mizzie MP FliHi)

5. 5 Iron Mp-52 25°

6. 6 Iron Mp-52 29°

7. 7 Iron Mp-52 33°

8. 8 Iron Mp-62 37°

9. 9 Iron Mp-62 41°

10. PW Mp-62 46° - Not sure about the PW loft here ?

11. GW Scratch TD 50°

12. SW Scratch TD 55°

13. LW Scratch TD 60°

14. Putter 03°

How does that setup look like ?

I don't know my distances yet with these clubs, as I haven't bought them or tested them yet.

I will buy new irons, woods, hybrid, wedges - and have new shafts in all them.

Unfortunately I can't test this yet, as most of the stuff I want to buy isn't out in stores yet - he_l you can't even get the Mizuno Mp-52 or Mp-62 yet, so how can I know my distances with these yet - I'm just guessing here, and this is all part of being a club ho and spending time in here on this great forum ;)

Just need to be sure about the wedge setup, as I'm about to make a new custom Scratch Wedge TD order.

Thanks ;)

Buy 6 wedges, find what works best, then sell the others :P .

Just to give you an idea, my setup goes

Driver 8.5

3 Wood 15

Hybrid 17

Hybrid 19

Hybrid 22

Hybrid 25

6 Iron 30

7 Iron 34

8 Iron 38

9 Iron 42

PW 46

Gap 52

Sand/Lob 58

If I find I need to carry my 64 for a course I will drop the 22 hybrid but the 58 get me by most of the time. I find the 52 the most used wedge as I use it around the green for most chip and punches.

I've been messing around with the my bag setup now for about a month or so now. Here are a couple of setups I've tried.

Setup 1: I put 4.5 degrees between all irons besides the wedges but it gives me 15 yards between all clubs instead of a my normal 13. Just leads to a lot more in between shots but I have all distances covered.

Club Distance Loft

Driver 285 10.5

3 wood 265 15

5 wood 245 18

Hybrid 230 20

4 iron 215 22

5 iron 200 25.5

6 iron 185 30

7 iron 170 34.5

8 iron 155 39

9 iron 140 43.5

Wedge 125 48

Wedge 105 54

Wedge 85 60

Setup 2: I took out my 5 wood and put a gap wedge in and moved back to 4 degrees between all clubs. Less in between shots and more options under 150 yards. Only draw back is I have to choke down on 3 wood for any shots from 235 to 250, it's alright from the tee but tough to hit and hold greens when going for par 5's in two or long par 3's.

Club Distance Loft

Driver 285 10.5

3 wood 265 15

Hybrid 230 20

4 iron 215 22

5 iron 200 25.5

6 iron 188 30

7 iron 175 34

8 iron 162 38

9 iron 149 42

Wedge 136 46

Wedge 120 50

Wedge 105 54

Wedge 85 60

Setup 3: I kept the 4.5 degree loft gaps and still took the 5 wood out. Least favorite setup. In between shots, too many options around the green with similar clubs like 56 and 60, and still have to choke down on the 3 wood.

Club Distance Loft

Driver 285 10.5

3 wood 265 15

Hybrid 230 20

4 iron 215 22

5 iron 200 25.5

6 iron 185 30

7 iron 170 34.5

8 iron 155 39

9 iron 140 43.5

Wedge 125 48

Wedge 112 52

Wedge 100 56

Wedge 85 60

I know I'm really over analzing this but I can't help it. Still on the fence with which setup I'm going to go with, 1 or 2. Leaning towards 2 because my irons manuf. specs are already strong and I bent my 4 iron 1 more degree strong, so it's really like a 3 iron.

I'd be more concerned at the bottom end. 17.5 to 20 to 24. I delofted all my irons and skip right over a 4 iron. 5 iron is 25.5*. I was playing 50,55,60 but dropped the 60 for now. Pretty useless club for the courses I play. I think 6* is fine. At 5* I was looking at PW 125, GW 117, SW 108, LW dead on 100.

I think you'll find a huge gap from a 9iron at 44 degrees to a blade type PW at 48 degrees. I started out with PW at 47 and then went 52-56-60 and found out that 52 and 56 were too close to the same yardage and decided to get a 50 degree instead. The 50 is a perfect club for me because its easier for me to hit 3/4 shots and still get the distance I want from it.

Thanks for all the suggestions you gave me - it really gave me some things to consider.

I think - and I highly stress THINK - that I will go for a setup, where I make my 5 iron 2° stronger, so instead of a 27° 5 iron, I have a 25° 5 iron.

A combo set of Mizuno Mp-52/Mp62 is in my plans, not only because they let you customize your set with a 2° loft choice, but this was one of the reasons why I probably will go for the Mizuno 52/62 combo set instead of a pure Titleist Ap2 iron set.

My loft gaps will be like this:

1. Driver 10.5° - TM Tour Burner Tp

2. 3 Wood 14.5° - TM Tour Burner Tp

3. 5 Wood 17.5° - TM Tour Burner Tp

4. Hybrid iron 21° - Mizzie MP FliHi

5. 5 Iron Mp-52 25°

6. 6 Iron Mp-52 29°

7. 7 Iron Mp-52 33°

8. 8 Iron Mp-62 37°

9. 9 Iron Mp-62 41°

10. PW Mp-62 46°

11. GW Scratch TD 50°

12. SW Scratch TD 55°

13. LW Scratch TD 60°

14. Putter 03°

This can all change, but I think this is probably the best solution for me :)

I was a fan of your original setup. Mine goes like this:

1. Driver 9.5* 240-250

2. 3-wood 15* 220

3. 17* hybrid 210

4. 22* hybrid 195

5. 24* 4-iron 185

6. 27* 5-iron 175

7. 31* 6-iron 165

8. 35* 7-iron 155

9. 39* 8-iron 145

10. 43* 9-iron 135

11. 47* PW 125

12. 54* Wedge 105-107

13. 60* Wedge 85

14. Putter 4

everything works out fine but I think I want to get my 17* hybrid replaced with the same hybrid as my 22* the 19* j36 just because I want something a little more forgiving.
