Platinum is better than all

Golf Magazine kept me away!
After the Golf Magazine article that made it seem the Platinum was so short, I didn't try them until late in the season. But here is my take on the top balls.

Platinum - Don't notice any distance issues, awesome around the greens, very durable ( I'm on 30 holes and use Spin Mills), excellent workability, and they hold their line well.

Pro V1 - Excellent all around ball, my second best.

Pro V1x - Durability is the major problem, these things scuff on 20 yard pitches. Long off the tee and excellent around the greens. Also they go off line easily.

Callaway i and ix - Hard, they might go a little further but who cares.

TaylorMade Red and Black - Just typical urethane balls, would rather play Nike or Titleist for a couple more bucks.

Bridgestone Black - Good ball, I still play it occasionally.

Red - Piece of junk

Srixon - They wouldn't send me a sample, so I boycotted. But the balls I did find and try were nothing special. They need to sell them at $30 or accept failure and close down.

i was also scared away from the platinum fearing a distance loss off the tee - however when i finally tested it the loss was SO minimal. this ball is durable, but where it really shines is around the green. AMAZING! with my x-forged wedges i can manipulate ball flight and spin on short shots. the more aggressive i am the better results. you can throw pitches or even chips right at the pin and stop it on a dime. as fall golf conditions become more prevalent i am able to rip 30 yard pitches back a couple of yards. i am 100% convinced that i will fit my ball to my wedges and putter vs. the driver. i am able to score with this ball and be much more aggressive with it vs. all other balls on the market. i also have heard that this ball shines with the driver with higher swing speeds, which may be the reason i have not lost distance vs. the pro-v1x...

Having trialled the NOP against the Pro V1 and V1X, it's certainly a few yards shorter for me.

That said, I fit a ball backwards from the green too and the performance around the greens, together with the bit of extra lift I get with the long irons means it's a winning combination for me. A fewyards lost off the driver is neither here nor there in relation to everything else. I also like the fact that's very workable and easy to shape shots with it. As stated above, it's also pretty durable and I easily get 36 holes out of a single ball.

I saw a comparison Nike posted at a golf store with the black and platinum versus other balls off the driver. For swing speeds 100 and 105 the black was the longest ball in the study and the platinum was not even mentioned. For swing speeds of 110 and greater the platinum was longer than the black and other balls mentioned. If I go to the store this week I will get all of the info. I thought it was a really interesting comparison. Very few Nike players actually use the black, Stewart Cink and Chad Campbell, I think. All others use the platinum. I have to agree with Mat on this subject. I work backwards with a golf ball. If I can not putt it and have short game control, who cares about driver distance. It might be a tad shorter off the driver, but the control is spot on and spin is phenomenal. I have also noticed increased carry distance off the long irons. You hit it and think it is on the descent, but it keeps on carrying and lands soft. Give them a try!

How do you guys feel about straightness of the NOP off the tee? Is there a big difference between 2007 and 2008? I agree with comments above about having a ball be right for putter and wedges, but that does me little good if I'm hitting my 3rd shot from the tee box more than once or twice a round.

I have to agree with th eoriginal poster.

I've been using the Nike OP for a few months and it's definitely the longest of all of the balls I've used this year. And for me it's also the best feeling and performing off of my putter.

Other balls I've used:

(TM TP Red, Callaway Tour iX, Titleist PV1, PV1x, Srixon Z-URC/S)

The NOP 08 has less sidespin than the NOP 07 when you miss hit your tee shot (open face or close face)
