Opinions on operation

I am considering the Callaway/Nikon LR800 Rangefinder and was wondering how it performs at picking up bunkers, trees, water and green edge as well as the pin? The "first target priority" feature sounds excellent. Also, how does the "scan" feature work? That's where you hold the button down and move the viewfinder to different objects.

The size of this seems perfect and I must admit I am a Nikon fan. Great lens quality!

Just got a LR1200 for a great deal. Used it yesterday and here's what I like and don't like compared to my Bushnell 1500 Tourney Ed.

Pros

Shoots target and spits out number faster.

Press and hold Power button and survey multiple targets. Bushnell can't.

Cons

Neoprene cover is a bit flimsy. doesn't protect the edges.

No hard lense cover like Bushnell.

Visual field is smaller than Bushnell, bid deal if you wear glasses like me.

Vs. LR800....alot bulkier. Size is the only thing I don't like about the LR1200. Side by side, it's not that much smaller than the Bushnell 1500.

Another thing about the Bushnell 1500: battery doesn't last long. I will find out with the LR1200.

I think LR800 is a great choice.

I have a Nikon Monarch 800. I may only use it 5-6 times per round at my home course, but i am still on the original CR2 battery and in the time I have had the Nikon I have posted over 100 rounds!

It's great. Very fast with the "pinseeker" equivalent function.

I have had my nikon 800 for over a year now and it is very good. I would not change a thing about it.

Bought an 800 for use on tour over a year ago. I'd had a couple of Bushnell's and had problems with both of them. AND they go through batteries like my laptop computer. The Nikon is brilliant. Great size, super-fast target pick-up and I've still got a full battery reading after 14 months. I don't think you can beat it!

I've had my Nikon 800 for a few months, still on the original battery. Works perfect for me, press and hold the button and it constantly scans, grabs the pin easily in most situations. It's more accurate than GPS from my on-course comparisons. GPS usually gets you within 3-5 yards. The laser gets you within 1/2 a yard to the pin.

The only drawback... some people who have tried mine say they don't have a steady enough hand to get the reading. So try one first.

would any1 be able to say if bushnell's are easier to steady and get a reading?

Callaway/Nikon models shoot faster, spit out yardage faster, thus more responsive to hand movement. Shaky hands are better off with GPS, IMO.

i take it you meant nikons are more forgiving with hand movement?

Not more forgiving, but more sensitive to hand movement. It will spit out numbers as fast as hand movement so you have to have some general idea of what's background and what's pin/flag. FWIW, I sold my Bushnell and kept the Cally Lr1200.
