Good public courses in/around Chattanooga TN?

OR Crossville TN area
Myself and a friend of mine have decided that we are sick and tired of the 25 degree weather here in Indy and want to take a quick little golf trip to Tennessee. Looking to head in the Chattanooga area and were wondering what some of the better public courses are around there for us to play. Possibly 3-4 courses in that area. Also on the way home we may stop around Nashville and try and squeeze another 18 in, any suggestions for that? Thanks a lot and I look forward to hearing from you guys!

Just by looking around online it seems Crossville may be a better area to play... Any suggestions around there?

its a fun course where i have a lake house, winchester tennessee called the bear trace at tims ford. good track with new greens. its only about a half our or so away from chat town. in nashville you should go to the legends in franklin there is a public and a private course that are great. you should be able to get on the private one in this economy. If you really know some people then you should play belle meade country club its my second favorite course ive ever played (behind shoal creek) but it is a little hotty toddy

Thanks for the info on that! I was just looking at a few of the Bear Trace courses, both Harrison Bay and Tims Ford. Might have to look at playing both of those it seems.

I just added the Crossville area to my possible golf destination too, seems like there is a better array of good courses around there, any good suggestions for that area?

BTW I will be calling Black Creek Club tomorrow, looks awesome.

I put together a TENTATIVE package that includes the following

Druid Hills Country Club

Dorchester Country Club

Stonehenge

Bear's Trace at Cumberland Mountain

Any reviews on those tracks? Or suggestions in the Crossville / Fairfield Glade area other than those?

Fairfield Glade courses are supposed to be very nice. I have not had a chance to play there.

The course in Chattanooga area to play is the Honors Course. Hosted a US AM, Mid Am, and NCAA Championship. I haven't played there yet, but everyone I know who has just raves about it being a great course.

Unfortunately, The Legends Club in Franklin no longer allows public play. It has gone completely private since Vanderbilt purchased it. I used to be a member; great courses. Probably best in the area with public access when it had one course used for the members and the other for the public.

Greystone Golf Club in Dickson is an excellent course, and very reasonable. Half an hour out of the way, but worth the effort. Play it from the tips for a real challenge.

Harpeth Hills (Nashville) is a municipal course that is very challenging and always in excellent shape.

Henry Horton State Park has a course that is very reasonably priced, and a very nice track. Pretty good shape for this time of year.

The Hermitage Courses are good, and so is the Spring House course at Opryland. Both have hosted LPGA and Champions Tour events.

If it were me, I wouldn't miss the Honors Course, and I'd hit Greystone in Dickson.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks I appreciate the input on that. I think Fairfield Glade is going to end up being the destination. The Honors Course is amazing, a few members at the course where I work here are members down at The Honors Course (which is VERY private btw). Believe me, if it was an option for me to get on without one of the members from my club, I would spend the ENTIRE trip there!

sadly, both sides of legends are private now...no public golf there anymore.

and i second Greystone. used to be overpriced, but when no one went out of there way to go to Dickson to play, its now pretty darn perfect.

i can also say Harpeth Hills is tough to get on during the weekends. it gets a TONof play but stays in decent shape year round. also, Henry Horton is a wide open track and aloooooong course, but cheap.

Hermitage has my two favs as far as public courses go.

Crossville...

Stonehenge is beautful, tends to be wet though...

Bear Trace is awesome...

Bertram is the name of the company we booked through for condo/golf...

Incredible deals before April hits!!!

Call about green aerification...We generally go late March, and they fairly well healed by then...

The Honors course in Ooltewah is private, not public, so unless you know somebody, you can't get on. BTW, it's REALLY nice!!! Legends in Franklin is 100% private, too.

Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain is a nice course, but nothing special. If playing in Nashville area, hit either Hermitage-President's Reserve or Greystone in Dickson.

But, if you are up for driving all the way down to Chattanooga, I would suggest you go down to the north side of Alabama instead and play The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail courses in either Muscle Shoals (Fighting Joe and The Schoolmaster) or in Birmingham (Ross Bride, Oxmoor Valley). Much better opportunity for warm weather and the courses are first rate.

Yeah been talking back and forth with my buddy about this trip and I think we are in the middle of coming to a consensus that the extra 2 hours of driving to AL for the RTJ trail is more than worth it... I'm thinking the Capitol Hill courses and Grand National. The fact that they're both close to Auburn doesn't hurt at all btw...

It's going to take longer than two additional hours to get from Indy to Grand National than it will take you to get to Crossville. That being said, the RTJ courses are definitely better than those in Crossville and the weather should be a few degrees warmer.

The two best courses in the Crossville area are the Bear Trace and Stonehenge, which are on your list. I would play Heatherhurst rather than Druid Hills or Dorchester. If you want to play 36 in one day, they have two courses at Heatherhurst that make a good 36 hole combo.

Capitol Hill is a little over an hour south of Bham and Grand National is 2 hours south of Bham. Worth the extra drive though. Both courses at Grand National and the Short Course (par 3) are really good. I had my first hole in one on the short course when I was in school at Auburn. I think you can get on it pretty cheap if you play one of the other courses.

  • 2 years later...

In town visiting the in-laws for the week and hoping to sneak away for 18 somewhere close by. Not looking for anything extraordinary just someplace I can rent clubs and get on for a quick 18 before anyone gets too suspicious. Any thoughts on the local Munis or other public options? South of Chattanooga is better based on the home base. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
