What tees would you play from?

Recommended Posts

Quick question.

I joined a semi private club and Im fortunate enough to be able to play 5 times a week right now. Im younger than most people I play with(doesnt matter) and a fairly long hitter so I prefer to play from the back tees at my course(6800+), but other than the guys I play with on MOnday, everyone seems to play from the middle tees(6200). If everyone is playing from the whites, is it wrong jump back and play the tips by myself, or should I just play the whites with everyone else and save the back tees for solo rounds and mondays?

I used to play the Blue tees all the time (6600~).

Changed my strategy this year to "play whatever everyone else in the group is playing" and having a ton more fun.

If you a single (or in a group of peers) play the back tees and test yourself otherwise enjoy the round and the company your with.

Remember that if you play the front tees your HAVE to go low. ;-)

I play with my old man and his friends every Saturday and I always play the tips while my dad plays the whites and the other 2 will switch from the whites or the blues. I really don't look at it as a big deal. Play from the fairway for all I care. Unless somebody is big into 'honors' golf which would make things screwy, I say play the tees you want. Should be playing 'ready golf' anyway.

I almost always play from wherever I feel like. I've met up with a few big bombers on my home course who play the tips, and I'll go back there with them (heck, the club championship is there, might as well get the practice). But it's about 7200 yards and I'm hitting 4W into 4 or 5 475+ yard par 4's, so it just becomes a chipping contest much of the time. It's actually very good MENTAL practice, in accepting the fact that I'm going to be so far out, and that I don't have to hit a miracle shot... although the GIR % does go down!

If they are people that you know, play whatever tees you would like. If with a random group, I would suggest playing with them as you dont want to be seen as an elitist (or if you are having a bad day, a hack who thinks too highly of their game). Most courses I play, I play from the tips but some of my friends/coworkers dont like playing their, so I move up with them.

Actually, I suggest playing from different tees every now and then, gets you into different spots on the golf course (if you play it often) and really test your game by bringing hazards you never worried about into play

my courses Southern Hills Golf Club both courses play 6800 and some change. When I play with two of my buddies that are pro's we play the tips(black tee's), when i'm out on the course practicing I play the blues. Most of our guys play from the blue tees and when i play with them it's the blues. We also have white tee's, gold tee's and red tee's, i don't play the white tee's unless i'm working on my long iron driving of the tee box. It really doesn't matter what tees you play from, it just gives you a different vantage point and gives you theoption to change things up and work on different tee shots. run with it

it is also easier to make wagers with others when you play from the same tees :yahoo:

If you are joining a group of three, it is amicable to play from the same tees as the group, or put it to a vote.

There seems to be a large discrepancy between tees (600+ yrds). You should ask the greens committee to consider posting a course rating for a combination of back and middle tees on the score card. This has been a great addition to our courses and creates a course of @6500 yrds which is a perfect compromise for accomplished players of varying ages or prowess from the tee.

Here is our scorecard for one of the courses. Note the yellow shaded yardages of the Blue and White tees. They constitute the "Tournament Tees".

Interesting how people can see things exactly opposite.

If I'm playing with my regular group I'll play whatever tees they are playing (makes it easier to play matches). On the other hand, if I'm randomly paired up then I'll play whatever tees I want to play.
