Joe Dante early wrist hinge - mixed advice

Scottk

Recommended Posts

Saw a very overweight golfer swing like this on the range once and he was striking the ball. At first thought he had do it because of his "body type".  After a bad ball striking round a few days later started playing around with it.  Haven't looked back.  Playing my best golf ever and have gotten back my "younger" me distance pretty much.  I use it chipping also and will put my money up against anyone one chipping.  As long as I stay tempo and get wide in my full swing I stay pretty error free.

Isn't Monte's no turn cast drill essentially an early wrist hinge (though not a Dante wrist hinge)?

It is not.  The first drill in Monte's latest NTC video on Rebellion Golf demonstrates individual parts needed to reach a desired P3 position (backswing, lead arm parallel).  The desired wrist position is demonstrated early as part of a group of suggested movements.  However, the order of the demonstrations within the drill are not to imply the "firing" sequence of the parts in an actual takeaway...

It seems to me that at the top of the backswing with Joe Dante's method, the golfer is in the same position with his wrists as Dustin Johnson. The only difference is that the wrists are set at address as opposed to at the top of the backswing.

There's a thought.  Maybe the early set is an easier way to "shallow" the club?

Yes TM-the beauty of the Dante early wrist break is that it eliminates superfluous moving parts. All I have to do is set me wrists and turn my shoulders. When I bump my left hip toward the ball, my arms will automatically shallow  with my right elbow against my side.  It's not a conscious move but a reaction to the bumping of my hips. If I make a conscious move to shallow out the club then I will lose all the power stored up with my turned shoulders. Hope this makes sense? Thanks, Howard

Hi guys.  I've been reading the abridged version of Dante's book online.  I understand the "early backward wrist break".  What I don't quite grasp is, when coming into and through the ball (making contact with the ball)....should the hands still be in the "early backward wrist break" position?  I think so but just not sure.

Marte,

With the Dante early backward wrist break, you need to keep the wrist break throughout the downswing. As the hands approach the ball you will not be able to anatomically maintain the wrist position. However, if you start the downswing with a lateral shift of the left hip and weight transfer from your right side to your left side, I guaranty you will compress the ball with amazing distance.

That's a great way to put it! Me too. It's like the club just wants to go back on plane and come down in the slot, and all I have to do is turn and lead with my elbow. I don't even have to think about squaring the face, as keeping the wrist bend appears to bring the face down square to the arc already.

Sure, I have to be mindful of my pivot and balance, but I'd have to anyway. This move just seems to eliminate a lot of other actions that I was trying to manage at the same time.
