Ideal Ball Position?

I've been told so many different ideas, but what exactally is the ideal ball position? I've been told that it should always be 2 inches inside your left foot and the only thing that should move is your right depending on the shot. Another was that it is different among irons, woods, pitches, chips. I've been using both and have found success with both in different shots. What exactly is the ideal ball position? Thanks!

For me, my big fault is when I get my ball position too far backwards. All of these ball positions are in respect to standard shots with a flared (45* towards target) left foot.

Driver - off left big toe

3 wood - off left heel

3&4 iron - off left heel

5-8iron - between left heel and sternum

9-S wedge - just left of sternum

Chips and low runners I play centered in my stance and stand square to the target Utley style.

High pitches and flops I play the ball off my left heel.

Hope that helps.

Here is a trick that I use from time to time. Find the bottom of your arc in your practice swing for any iron, place the ball just behind that and you should be set up in great shape. Tee'd up woods and long irons need to be slightly ahead, or well ahead in the driver, so that you hit them on the upswing. You can do this for pitches and chips as well and this is especially useful for uneven lies. Taught by Roger Gunn, and the only useful thing in his video series IMHO. HTH

Certain shots have more specific needs ie bunker and flop shots. Minor adjustments here and there help produce different shot trajectories.

Just recently I went thorugh a little ball-striking issue prior to my surgery for an inguinal hernia. I kept on hooking my 8-PW. I realized what the problem was and it was something that I totally overlooked. Ball position.

For whatever reason I slipped inside the 2 inches (off left heel) and had the ball back a tad too much. Hook city. Especially with the 8 iron from 150 to 160yds. The shot distance was perfect but pulled off line. I would say that this is a serious oversight, and one that I will not soon forget. IMHO 2 inches inside the left heel is best, with gradually moving your right foot further away for longer irons. Unless hitting driver where hitting off of the left toe or in my case even with heel is best. Fairway woods just a tad more inside.

Alex

I have the "Tiger Woods How I Play Golf" book and he says your driver should be just off your inside left heel and wedges are in the dead center of the stance. Everything else is in between there. That's what I use.

thats a bunch of bull jer jer even tho your right you still put the ball way back in your stance on your wedges and short irons... ive told you that before but you never listen even about the hands foward you didnt listen to me on that ether but :golfer:
