Goldwin AVDP Tour Irons

Trash or Treasure?
I have a set of Goldwin AVDP Tour Irons with stiff Graphite shafts that say "Tour" on the hosel sitting in the original factory box unhit in my closet.

I know this company went kaput in the 90's and I've read many differing opinions on the company and specifically the irons that I possess.

Do these possess any value whatsoever? I'm not a seller... I'm someone who came upon them looking to play them but after receiving them considered they might be a treasure and had a custom set built instead to use.

Should I hold onto them or should I take them out and hit them?

Global golf trade in value is about $16. http://tradein.globalgolf.com/Default.aspx?rfid=1007 PGA Value doesn't even list Goldwin - not enough trades on eBay. Someday they might have some collectability, you never know.

As I recall, these are a very forgiving design that might be good to play. Somewhat similar to a Callaway X-?? Pro design.

Thanks, Cy. Definitely TRASH at 16 bucks...but...the best I could list them at is in "good" condition". These are pristine...so mabye, they're worth double at 32 bucks. Considering I paid 150... Um, that would make me a candidate to fall for every infomercial in America. I did think those eXtenze things would work. :)

PGA Value Guide doesn't list you clubs so no value can be sought there. There's a set for sale on ebay right now for $180 so you could track them and see if they ever sell for your own personal reference.

Thank you, Buzzkill...I did see a similar mint but not new set on Ebay for 349. Luckily, for me, I didn't buy them to sell them. I just feel stuck. Don't want to play them...Don't want to sell them. One will probably ultimately win out.

I should've just played them. I ended up buying some Rifle Graphite Shafts and some FST Pro White's and had a set of Cleveland Clones assembled at my local mom and pop golf shop. I've spent a bunch of money on clubs and shafts I don't need. I threw the rifle's up in my closet and they're resting on top of my Goldwin's. I've never sold a thing in my life, but I might need to or the wife is going to kill me when she realizes how much I've wracked up on golf stuff lately.

Value is also in the eye of the beholder. I read a bunch of things about the Goldwin company and I was greatly intrigued by their club offerings so I bought them and was happy until I realized that you can't get a set like this and couldn't bring myself to hit them.

I had a Goldwyn AVDP driver. I still remember the day I bought it, man I was thrilled. The performance pretty much sucked, but it was too pretty to throw away.

I ended up drilling a hole in the top and filling it with sand. I finished the science project off with a dab of epoxy.

Waddya know, instant weighted practice club! Works like a charm! (and pretty too!)

If your irons were never hit, go hit 'em. It sounds to me like you don't want to sell them anyway.

I have a similar driver. I have the lower lofted version with the cool gold faceplate. I can't hit it to save my life. It feels stiff but the ball does go a long way when I rarely hit it good on the range.

There was a guy who told me he'd give me 200 in 6 months. He said he'd give me half that now, or double in 6 months. If I wait, at least I get my initial investment back.

If the clones treat me right, I'll probably give them to him if I can resist hitting them which is no sure thing.

Anyone else ever have a similar dilemma?

They didn't succeed because they were too light for most golfers. Same problem people have with 40-55g shafts today. They get too wristy and flippy. With the large butts and thin grips, these magnified the problem.

Their light weight made them a good club for kids, ladies, and seniors that don't want heavy shafts. My mother played a set of Goldwins for a long time before she got a set of Callaway Gems.

I remembered when Nick Price was endorsing them. They were so light aand I thought how in the world are they going hit a ball in a rough with the club being so light. IMHO --- junk! if you use them an ordinary club will feel like a sledge hammer.

LOL. Think Champions tour player John Jacobs used the driver back in the late 90s but doubt he played the irons. They might be suitable for a beginner with a low Swing Speed. Otherwise I'd advise u ebay them.

If I ebay them, and I have never ebayed anything, I would do it next April or May.

I don't understand how stiff shafted clubs would be for "beginners".

I guess I could just keep them until I get to be a senior (God willing) and play them then. If I'm on a fixed low income by then, at least I won't need to buy a set of clubs.

I didnt see any mention of stiff above but may have missed it. 1 person on golfreview.com swears by them but he / she didnt give details on the setup. The weight of the set would put me off though.

Hey Joe Pesci played these, what more endorsement do you need? I remember a Pebble Beach Pro-Am I worked in the late 90's and I noticed he had the whole set up. AVDP cart bag, outfit, umbrella etc...One thing I take issue with is weight tho, I read they were very heavy heads with light shafts. There is a big difference light clubs and light shafts.
