54* Wedge

Does anyone use this as a sand wedge?
Im in the market for some new wedges and really leaning towards the spin milled, I currently play a 56 and 60, and was considering dropping the 60 for a 52 and 56. I then saw that there is no spin milled 52, so now I was looking at maybe getting a 54 and 60. My question anyone use this wedge set up and how is the 54 as a sand wedge or do you use the 60 out of the sand?

I use a 54 as my primary sand wedge. I do tend to open up my wedges quite a bit though, so take this FWIW. The thing i like about a 54 is that you don't have to swing as hard to get the ball going. It comes out with less spin and more roll. An "easeir" swing means less chance for a blade or a chunk and more consistent entry into the sand. I've found I can get up over some pretty high lips this way as well.

The only time I really reach for my 60* is when I'm really short sided, or plugged lies where I need to get the ball up and stop it ASAP.

As far as bounce for steeper swings and softer conditions (fluffy sand) use a wedge with more bounce (12-14*). Also remember that the more you open up your wedge, the more bounce it will ADD. So if you play your sand shots with a pretty square face, then get as much bounce as possible.

Shallow swingers or harder conditions (hard sand and fairways) can use a wedge with less bounce (8-10*). Again, if you like to open it up you wedge a lot, you can use a wedge with less bounce since you're adding bounce to the wedge.

Hope that helps.

I have a 54*, but use it primarily for chipping and from the fairway. I'll use it in the sand for long bunker shots from time to time, but most sand shots are played with my 60*

Hey Rod,

I currently have Taylormade RAC 54 degree and 60 degree chrome wedges that I play. I usually use the 54 degree out of green side bunkers but it really depends on if I need to play a higher flop shot - use 60 or just a soft landing/roll shot - use the 54. I should also mention that my PW is 48 degrees so there is a nice 6 degree diff between all of my wedges.

The spin mills are nice wedges as well, and I really like the amount of bite on them. I've got a fairly steep attack angle on my wedges, and my 54 degree wedge has 10 degrees of bounce. It seems to work well for me. I also like the fact that the 54 gives me a solid 105 - 110 yardage for approach shots onto a green and will check up well on bump and runs.

Hope this helps.

I use Cleveland 588s 54* sand and 60* lob wedge, my next wedge is my 48* PW. I like the 54* because it also serves as my gap wedge, I use it out of the sand and most shots from inside 85 yards, including chipping. The 60* lob is one of my favorite clubs. At first, I had a hard time dumping the 56* for the 54* but so far, it has worked out very well. I like the additional distance I get from it and the fact that I can use it for slightly running chip shots. I noticed that a few pros have this set up as well (Ernie Els and Anika Sorenstam).

I have the same set up as Ascan. I use my 60* primarily from the sand. It's so easy. i havn't bladed or chunked a sand shot since i started using the set up 5 months ago after getting my Spin Milled. I use my 54* just like i did my 52*. I found that i hit my driver or approach far enough so that i would have a full 54* instead of an awkward 3/4 52* into the hole.

i have a 54 and 60* wedge setup. it has been in the bag in a while because i've noticed the high loft of the 54* causes havoc in the winds, but it finds its way back in the bag every once in a while.

the 54* was solid. for me it was as good as a 56* but more versatile.

Hi, I use a 54 and 60 cleveland cg10 and 588 set up. I like it much better than the 56 60 set up. I have played with the 54 and 60 for 3 years now, and I wouldn't go back.

About the titleist wedges, I know lots of guys play them and like them. Lot's of them on tour, but seriously before you buy see if you can hit one and then hit a cleveland. You'll find the cleveland much more accurate I think, and the distance much more consistant. I am a member at a private club and my friends and I have been passing around a vokey wedge and a cg 10 wedge that we got from our reps. Also, keep in mind, we can buy titleist clubs super cheap too, about 1/2 the price as we can cleveland. Honestly so far no one has liked the titleist wedge. Even me, and I am a total titleist guy, I have everything in my bag is titleist except for my driver (cleveland with a diamana 83x) and my wedges (cleveland).

I know lots of pro's play them and like them, but maybe they are more custom ground than the ones you can buy on the shelf.

You mentioned bounce, the titleist feels like they might be rated low. They seem to have lots of bounce.

I would go for as little bounce as you can unless you normally play in very wet, or soft conditions. The less bounce the cleaner you can pic the ball. With lots of bounce you wont be able to pic the ball clean at all.

Have a great day!

The 54 and 60 is a great combination. I didn't want to carry four wedges. I have my PW bent to 48 so I have a 6 degree gap between my wedges, which works out great. I live in Arizono and we have a lot of hard turf and compacted bunker conditions so I go with wedges that have low bounce. If you live in an are with fluffy sand in the bunkers and lush fairways and rough, go with high bounce wedges. I use the 60 out of most greenside bunkers but I'll use the 54 if it is a long bunker shot.

You can have a 56/57 bent to a 54 and increase the bounce at the same time

A 56/57 bent to 54 will have less bounce . . . A 54 bent to 56-57 will have more bounce.

Any time you bend loft stronger, you decrease bounce. Bend it weaker you will increase bounce.

This picture should make it a little more clear. As you decrease the loft angle, the bounce angle must also decrease by the same amount.

I have a 46 PW as part of my set and then go -50, 54, 58

The Ping Tour 54 is a versatile wedge - great out of sand. Even the 58 Low Bounce is fine out of greenside bunkers in firm sand. I like a 58 or 59 with 8-10 deg of bounce with lots of grinding, making the effective bounce lower where you can still open it up but use it for higher flying, quick stopping bunker shots.

Every time I see a thread like this it makes me want to go back and try the 48-54-60 combination, and it never works for me. I really need 4 wedges. I don't like to swing hard at my wedges, but feel forced to at times when I only carry 3 of them. My biggest problem seems to come between the 48° pw and 54° SW. I have always struggled trying to control a 3/4 PW, especially out of the rough. With 4 wedges I seem to have EVERY distance covered.

On the other side of my bag I go with 17° FW metal nd 20° hybrid. This seems to cover my long game gaps really well, and I am much more comfortable knowing that my short game gaps are covered. It seems on tour 3 wedges is much more popular, but those guys practice a ton every day, I just don't have the time to get my 3/4 shots dialed in...

Personally I am a big fan of the 49* 54* 59* set up, I find with the 54* I can do all the shots that I can hit with a 56* and if I need a lob, I have the 59* + there is not the huge distance gap between a stock Pw of 47* and say a 56*

254.10 Vokey has been my "go-to" club, until I got my Scratch, which is pretty much an exact copy!

My setup is 44 and 50 in the Taylormade R7 XD and 54 and 58 in the Ping Tours. My 58 has the special WRX "T" (sole and heel) grind that allows me to open the face if I need more loft without digging. Highly recommended if you play alot of tight lies and like to open the face on your Lob wedge.
