Another new TM Driver

R5 XL

I was at Dicks Sporting Good today and they a new R5 XL driver that they said came out yesterday. They should just name the golf section the Taylor Made Pro Shop. Does anyone know anything about this driver?

They also had a R510 TP with a TM Speeder 757 shaft for $299. Is this a good combination and price. I asked if there were any discounts on it, and the sales person said, "well it's marked 299". I was hoping to get it for 199.

That's a bit much for an R510 TP. You can get them on eBay for a lot less.

I don't have that much or official information, but I went to Dick's yesterday to take a look.

 

For the drivers, they have r5 XL 460 D and 460 N. So, I guess they're 460cc. Each has two fixed weights setting on the sole. The N has one near the toe and one near the heel, while the D has both toward the heel. I pulled the N to look at it at adress. It sit pretty nicely. I didn't look as close as some other TaylorMade drivers. However, like someone mentioned in another thread, they don't look premium and so they can look a bit "faked".

 

The fairway woods looked fine. I compared the face with the r7 St and V-Steel. They were all about the same, but the shape of the head is more like Titanium fairways like R580 or r5. So, I think they are high launching fairway woods.

 

The hybids were what I was impressed. They appear to be way smaller than the Mid or Dual, but not as small as the original Rescue. I admited I was tempted and almost pulled the plug on this one.

I was told that Dick's inked a deal with TM for an exclusive line of TM products, and the word 'round the campfire is that they are price point products designed with price point quality.

 

However, an R510 TP new for $299 with a TM Speeder 757 shaft (which, unlike Titleist's Speeder shaft, is identical to the Speeder 757 just with different graphics) is not a bad deal. Granted you can find one used for less on eBay, but $299 isn't bad considering the shaft alone is worth $200+. IMO its one of the best drivers TM ever made.

That's true, but that's not a new news. Dick's has the biggest TaylorMade account. They (TaylorMade) have made sevearal special releases for Dick's including all LCG Series, R580XD fairway woods and now r5 XL Series. LCG woods are like the TaylorMade 200 Series. The LCG irons look like a second grade product. R580XD's look pretty good, but they were off the shelf as soon as the r5 XL's came in.

did anyone hit it... granted if your dicks is anything like mine then there isn't much you can learn. The Dicks here has an exagerated closet with a net. I feel like there is barely room in there to get a swing off.

You know the funny thing about Dick's is that they will sell the Exculsively made for Dick's Taylor Made line but will not take it back in on their trade in policy. I bought 2 of the LCG fairway woods they sold and was told that they do not take them in on the trade up deal. I guess they are good enough to sell to you and make money off of but not good enough to buy back.

That is because it is not OUR trade in policy. It is actually 3balls.com. They send a list of what they are taking and their price to the stores monthly. It isn't our decision what we take in and what we don't. Once we take them in, we have to send them to 3balls.com within 48 hours.

Reason Dick's gets all these exclusives is because we are TM's biggest customer.

Like mljones99 said, Dick's has the biggest TaylorMade account. Also, 3Balls.com is the company that Dick's has contract with for trade-in. It's not surprising that they don't take TaylorMade exclusive clubs back because of the demand. Not many people, even on this board who are normally knowledgable about golf stuff, know about this r5 XL series. It's not even on the TaylorMade website. So, the used prices will drop dramatically.

 

But, again, the r5 XL hybrids look really good.
