Recommendations on stay and play courses for a Buddies golf weekend

We always do a very large trip to Biloxi, MS. In the past we have gone in January but this year we are going in February. The weather is always spotty in January so we hope a move to February will help.

The nice part is that Biloxi has several large casinos and plenty of golf courses within short driving distance of the casinos. The nice part is that there are high end accomodations available as well as cheaper so you have your pick of places to stay and something to do when you are not on the course.

I would recommend the following places to play in and around Biloxi:

Shell Landing - Davis Love III design
Grand Bear - Jack Nicklaus Design
Fallen Oak - Fazio Design (must stay at Beau Rivage Casino)
The Oaks - Hooters Girls as waitresses
The Bridges - Palmer Design (Casino on site)

I have always been impressed with the golf courses as well as the cost. This is a nice cheap alternative to some of the bigger budget locations.

I'm guessing that since the OP put this in the South and South East subforum that he's looking for something in that area.

However, the question is what time of year?

If it is South/SE, I would recommend Myrtle Beach. Excellent selection of courses, great places to eat and drink.

For me a great buddies golf weekend doesn't need fancy accommodations... its needs a variety of courses, some drinks and some good old shenanigans!

I haven't been to Myrtle but everyone here loves it. Thinking of guys trips this fall there.

Also don't discount the RTJ golf trail.

Gulf Shores would make a fun weekend. Peninsula Golf Club, Kiva Dunes, Craft Farms (36 holes of Palmer), Lost Key (Palmer) would make a great weekend with the boys.

Can't go wrong with Myrtle Beach or Orlando. Plenty of choices for every budget. For a weekend trip they offer you a lot more choices than the RTJ trail and there are a lot more off course activities. They are also easier to get to from many places than most of the RTJ trail venues.

"Stay and play", I think of Foxfire and Little River. Tons of area courses so plan on playing others than just where you are staying. Tot Hill Farm is my new favorite. Little River, Foxfire, Tobacco Road, The Carolina, and The Pit, are some popular area courses as well. Can't beat the Sandhills of NC for golf. PM if you want any additional info. Don't know what kind of budget you would be looking at but...

Mrytle Beach..specifically, Pawley's Island: Heritage, Calendonia, True Blue, TPC
Kiawah Island...The Ocean Course, Osprey, Cougar Point
PGA National Palm Beach...The Champions Course and 4 others
Sea Island, St. Simons GA (The Cloisters)...Seaside and Plantation
Tampa, Innisbruck...Copperhead and others.
Pinehurst...#4, #7, #8 and #2 (Screw the money, play here before you die).

Gulf Shores is a great place for a buddies trip (Stay and play @ Kiva dunes highly recommended). Sandestin in Florida is a solid place to go as well.

I'll second Gulf Shores. Stayed at Kiva Dunes. If you go, stay at the Kiva Village. Your patio overlooks the 18th green and the condos are the best. We had 8 guys go there in April and had two,3 bedroom condos. Each condo had 2 bedrooms with king beds and the other bedroom had 2 queen beds. Each with it's own bathroom and shower and TV. Plus a full kitchen and family room with a large flat screen TV. Besides Kiva Dunes we played both courses at Craft Farms, the Peninsula and the Gulf Shores Golf Club (formerly the Gulf Club at the Warf). Also ate at some great seafood restaurants.

Dancing Rabbit in Philadelphia, MS is great. They have two great courses and the rooms above the clubhouse are nice. Nice to be able to play a morning round, take a break in the middle of the day and then tee it up again in the afternoon.

There is also a casino close and they leave a cart out at night for each room. You just follow the path through the woods and then there it is. Even had 8 parking spots up front for the carts.

Dancing Rabbit is some fine golf. The casino was not run very well when I was there. Food marginal. Dealers rude. Couldn't get a drink it seemed. Impossible place to get to. However, the golf is great.
I am partial to Biloxi. Lots of golf options, food and entertainment options.
If you want pure golf, good food, and more golf go to PineNeedles in Southern Pines. Can't be beat IMO.

Mesquite/St. George area is pretty hard to beat. We go in late May every year...when the rates drop. May highs are normally only in the 90's...and with most of us living in Texas...90's in the desert feels like the 80's.

Mesquite must plays....Coyote, Conestoga and the jewel...Wolf Creek. Other courses here...but these are the tops.

St. George must plays....Coral Canyon, Ledges and the jewel....Sand Hollow. Other courses are good...but these are the best.


If you still have energy after golf, there is always the casinos in Mesquite. I usually plan an extra day when I get back to Texas just to rest.
