Callaway Tour I(s) versus Taylor Made Penta

From inside of 100 yards, the Penta has a great feel and bite to it. Very ProV1's in terms of greenside spin.

The i(s) is a pretty darn good ball though.. It's subjective what you like the feel of, and want out of your ball more. I'd love more distance, but I think control around the greens is more important to me, as well as getting enough spin on irons to hold the pool table greens I play on.

sounds like overall spin (irons, wedges) winner is the i(s)?
or was it the penta. dont care about distance too much, more about spin.

for me the callaway was the winner in the 1 round I played, around the green about even got both balls to check nicely from around 100 the penta hopped and stopped while the cally backed up a bit. I really like the cally feel better then the penta especially off the driver. I found it longer for me than the penta. Obviously it was just one round but I'm hoping to play this weekend to give it some more testing, weather permitting.

The Callaway ball feels softer off the driver and longer clubs, thats for sure. I like the slightly firmer feel, ala the V1x..

I'm finally getting some warm weather this weekend, and will play both balls on each hole again and see what I still think. I liked last years IX ball alot... enough that I have 3 dozen still primed and waiting to be used up. I loved the "sticky" cover it had, which they moved away from in the new line of balls this year.

I hear you about the v1x I still got 4 dz didn't lose to many balls last season :D to me the penta feels little more firmer than the v1x, but could be just the weather here in the pnw and last week barely got above 50 and drizzle. The weather says 60's and sunny this coming saturday so I'll be taking it both out again along with my just arrived vr tour.

without durability issues, which doesn't matter to me because i shred range balls, which is the better ball? i currently play the bridgestone b330 and crush it. it would take a lot for me to switch, if i could find a ball with comparable distance and good spin around the green... i'd switch(for me, no ball can keep up with the b330 off the tee b/c of the low spin). however, i do run in to situations where i need to make a small swing and put some spin on it... that's where the b330 lacks in my book

In my experience the Penta spins a bit more off the driver than the i(s), as a matter of fact, the i(s) seems to be very low spin off the driver. The amazing part is it is exactly the opposite around the greens; low driver spin, high green side spin... nice!

I switched from titleist prov1x to TP red in September last year. they both played pretty similar but i preferred the better spin fron the TP red on the shorter irons.

I moved to Penta's in December and i immediately picked up 15 yards. I played with at least 4 other pros who were always the same distance as me and i consistently got them by 15 yards or more.

It was interesting though that 2 other pro's i know, said that they lost distance with the Penta.

Thinking about all that, i think maybe its got something to do with the 5 piece construction. I guess the results vary from player to player depending on how each player loads their driver and how they compress the ball. It seems to me thats the only explantation as why i get more distance and others didnt.

For me however the Penta scuffs up pretty bad. I use to use a pro v1x and the Tp red for 2 rounds frequently. Some of the guys thought i was crazy !!(maybe !!), but i figured if i shot 68 or 67 with a ball then i was going to use it again.

I could never consider using a Penta for 2 rounds. In fact i am looking to change it after 9 holes due to it scuffing pretty bad .

On short irons i find that the Penta doesnt spin quite as much as the TP red did. I also thinks it moves more in a cross wind. But into the wind and downwind definately better.

Recently i have been playing the Callaway i(s) and the Penta in practise rounds.
Currently i have played 8 rounds with both balls side by side and i am still 50/50.

The Callaway i (s) is a truly great ball, no question. Is it better than the penta? hmmmm i am still 50/50 on that.

I think the Penta is about 6 yards longer, but thats not always the case. The problem when playing ball against ball is that you never really hit 2 drives exactly the same on each hole so its hard to be decisive on this.

As i mentioned i think the penta does move a little too much sideways in a crosswind sometimes. Its here where the Callaway excels. In a reasonable strong crosswind i find the Callaway i(s) stays really straight, and i can go right at the pin. I cant remember a period where i have stiffed so many mid to short irons.

Chipping and Putting? This is where i love the feel of the Penta, I love the feel of the Penta for chipping. It has a much softer feel for chipping and lob shots, and just seems to roll so much better putting than the Callaway.

As far as durability goes i have found the Callaway is great. Very durable and a lot better that the Penta in this regard.

After all of that, i am still 50/50. both are great golf balls and i could play either. I just wish i could say for sure theat one is 10 yards longer than the other, so i will keep testing for a couple of weeks more.

I am finding everyones reviews interesting, especially the one by G-Bone. Great review!!!

I(s)= Cover Shreded a lot, low spin off driver, soft feel on green. more backspin on green.

Penta= High ball flight, COVER VERY DURABLE even with boxed grooves. soft feel with irons, wedges, and on putter. Not a lot of spin on green.

Overall I was very pleased with the Penta. For me, higher ball flight is great. The cover was also very DURABLE! I ended up playing the rest of the round with 1 penta ball after shredding 2 Callaway Balls. For you guys who are paying $40+ for dozens of golf balls, you will not be happy with how the ball shreds.
I play the Callaway X-Forged Wedges with the MD grooves and I found the Tour i(s) to be very durable but the Tour i(z) was not that durable.
Same effect here, i actually thought that the i(z) would be the more durable but it was quite the opposite.. The i(s) is a good ball, alot better overall than the i(z) in my opinion..

For me the Penta was about a half a club shorter throughout the bag. Both felt soft and Both are very good golf balls but I chose the Callaway I(s) over the Penta because I just seem to make ALOT more putts with the I(s).

I would say the difference in spin and feel on short shots is negligible, Durability definitely goes to Penta, and the Penta is much better off the driver IMO, it seems to retain the soft feel, but is very easy to keep on line, low spin (from driver) and stupid long.

I thought that the spin on the full shots is about the same but the main difference for me comes on pitches and chips. The Callaway i(s) spins more for me on the little touch shots and flops where the Penta releases a bit more for me. i could play either ball but would not have to change my game much to suit the Callaway from the Nike ONE Tour I currently use. I would have to put in some time to get used to the Penta around the greens but that would not keep me from playing it. I like the TM Penta over the Pro V1 because I feel the Penta is more predictable.
