vintage putters

Recommended Posts

As a newcomer to golf I have struggled to find a putter that suits me and in the end after trying several different styles (mallet, blade offset etc) and manufacturers (MD, Spalding, and a few others) I have concluded that the ben sayers "benny" is the one for me. I have a "mallet" one (although its more blade than mallet) and an original blade version that I picked up last week for £3. I was wondering if anyone else plays a "vintage" putter in their everyday game as well as vintage bag (I know you only play vintage Christian! ;) )

Hi Dave,

I have a few older putters that I rotate. One of my favourites is an old "JH Busson" styled putter which is brass headed "bullseye" style and as heavy at 0.6kg as any putter I have ever come across. I think it is heavier than those modern "heavy putters" that you see from time to time. It has a wonderful leather grip with a piece of bamboo set down inside the front of the leather to provide a flat surface for the thumbs. Here's a pic..

Cheers, BG

Moanin'M your collection is an inspiration :-D

I love the look of Ping putters (I don't care for the milled putters of today) and currently own only Ping putters.
The Ping Pal 2 BeCu has spent most time in my bag after using a MgBr Ping Anser for a couple of years. In the past couple of years I've bought a MLT, Danser, 69, BLD and Rite In 5, and I still have my old Anser somewhere and a stainless steel Anser 2. The BLD isn't working for me, so that's going on ebay sometime soon, the rest of them each get some time in the bag. I've promised myself not to buy anything new (for a while) as I've got the collectors bug in my blood and I'm trying not to give in :-) If I would, I'd start bidding on every ballnamic B68/B69, A2, 69BC that showed up on ebay, and I really would like to add a 8802 or DBAP to my putters.

Ping Pal 2 Steel was my choice for many years, great putter in mu opinion, not so keene on the Pal4 which is the same head with a plumbers neck.

The scottsdale Ballnamics are great putters, great designs, the hotdog series in particular.

DBAP is a must have, mine is courtesy of a regular member here......

I rotate through all sorts of vintage putters including:

2 Wilson 8802's (1984 and 1999 re-issue)

Wilson 8813 (1970s era)

MacGregor Response ZT 615 (original metal colored from 1986)

Nicklaus Response 2006 replica. (has a little more weight to it than the '86 original)

MacGregor Response Low Twist (1987-88)

Finalist Putter (circa 1959-62) Looks like a cash-in or Sam Snead Wilson.

Ray Cook Mallet (1978)

Louisville Golf Alex Smith Hickory Putter. (I have yet to take this one out to the course yet)

Wilson Gene Sarazen Stroke Master (Late '40s Early '50s version)

Ben Hogan P-500 "His Own" (my personal favorite)

Ben Hogan P-600 "Sinker" This one raises some eyebrows even more than the Response putters.

Ben Hogan "Exact Balance" It looks alot like the P-500 w/o the white sightlines.

Here is a Picture one,

IN 1979 to celebrate their silver anniversary Ben Hogan Companyy commissioned Scottish furniture maker Macdougall to make unique putters. They made 12 Macdougall putters, 6 with steel shafts and 6 with hickory shafts .I am missing 2 of them
The wooden shaft ones are very cool with no grip, the wood is flat at top with thin piece of leather on the flat part

Ever seen a P-208 Macdougall Ben Hogan??

The shafts were not hickory in the 6 wooden shaft models. They were bird's eye maple.

My bad, I knew that , I just put hickory as a habit, thanks

I have the color brochure from 1979 for the putters and they do not mention head covers. There were 2 display racks ,each holding six putters, Those racks would be a cool find.
