Suggestions on a combo set

Guys, I've been playing the Mizuno MP33 for two years. Since I am not able to play as much this season, I am looking for something a little more forgiving like a combo set. I have narrowed down to NIKE Forged Pro Combo and Ben Hogan FTX irons. Does anyone have any suggestions on these irons? Or are there any better choices out there?

nike pro combo. easy to hit clubs. very forgiving, yet able to shape shots. good trajectory (easy to change with different shafts). soft forgings for a great feel. can be had inexpensively now too, especially the 2004 version (has the medalions in the cavity).

Since you are already hitting Mizuno, have you thought about a MP60/32 combo set? I have one and love it!

There are a LOT of good combo sets if you are looking to special order, or even go components.

 

1) Titleist 735-CM

2) You could build a combo set from various Titleist models.

 

3) Snake Eyes 600XC/C/B, big cavity, cavity, and blades.

 

4) Mizuno MP-60 or 30 and 32 or 33. You can find a mid-forgiving cavity back in the 30 or the 60, and a blade style in the 32 or 33. Another possibility here would be for even more forgiveness in the long irons and go MX23 -MP30-MP32.

 

Point I'm trying to make is that there are plenty of options if you want to be creative, and just find some long irons and short irons you like, and build a combo set. Heck, they don't even have to be from the same brand.

Back in 1999 I custom ordered a 'combo' set consisting of Hogan Apex Plus 3-5 and Apex Blades 6-E (pw). People thought I was nuts. It's been a great set. I've recently switched out the Apex Plus 3-5 for TM x-300 fci 3-5 - now how is that for a whacky combo set? I've always been a fan of Hogan, so I'll recommend the FTX combo set from them. They used to be forged in the USA as well (Fort Worth, TX) but I'm not sure about that now. Regardless, I will never get rid of my 98 Apex blades 6-E. I might find another 3-5 down the road (like MP-60's) but the blades will never go. good luck

My 2 favourites are the Titleist 735.CM and TaylorMade RAC TP Combos. Not sure how available the RAC TP Combos are on the second hand market but they are really good.

There is a reason why the Pro Combo's are an originating "combo" set still on the market today. :)

 

The difference between the originals and "newer" model is cosmetics and factory shaft. Great feeling forged clubs that flow throughout the set.

I am now heading towards NIKE Pro Combo. I've heard a rumor that Mizuno makes NIKE clubs and precept makes NIKE balls. It will be great if that's the case. I am so much used to the soft feel of Zuno. I hope they will have their own combo set very soon.

Very inexpensively, you could pick up a set of Mizuno forged Grad MP irons, then use your MP33 shorts and the MP Grad mids and longs and have one of the original combo sets. Inexpensive, and nothing says old school like having a few Grads in your bag.

cosmetics and stock shaft. some say the bounce or sole grind, but i've talked to a number of nike reps and a nike staffer and they say its just cosmetics and shaft.

mizuno doesn't make nike clubs. they both have a similar soft feel, but the mizuno is softer but a little. nike balls are manufactured by bridgestone (who manufactures a number of balls including precept), but are nike designs and not bridgestone balls with nike's name.

 

the 32/60 is an option, but my problem with it is that the 60 launches the ball signicantly higher that this could cause a problem where you make the transition.

I read (probably in this very forum) about Mizuno releasing a combo set called MP 80. That set might be worth waiting for. (if its not just a rumor, but it sounds like a logical consequence for Mizuno).

 

Apart from that, I recommend the Hogan Apex FTX. I have seen them in a store and they look great. Have only hit a 5 iron some years ago, but I cannot remember how I liked it (and I think it might have been Apex P.R.O. .

Tommy Armour 845cm. I have had great luck with this set and they are dirt cheap.

I play the Hogan FTX and think they are the some of the best forged irons. Can get a great set on ebay for a much cheaper price than miz.

I've only tried FTX 6 iron on the hitting mat in my local store. My feeling is the iron was really long and consistent. But it did feel a little too solid for me. Since you have used them for a while, can you tell how exactly they feel on the course compare to other brands? How are the transitions from long to mid to short irons. That's the most important aspect I am looking for from a combo set.

 

BTW, to me, the FTX are the best looking combo set out there.

Tommy armour Evo's came out well before the combo's. I wouldn't say Nike are the originals, I would say they are the first to make them popular. Sorry for nit picking.

I took delivery of one of the first sets of FTX'S in the UK and I probably will play them for a few more years. Can't say enough about these clubs. Awesome feel, long irons are high and forgiving and as far as my Equalizer is concerned from 130 out it is a serious weapon.

I tried all sorts of different combos, then I found a tour set of 300 forged irons paired with RAC MB satins. I haven't changed irons since! The 300 forged is so much better in the longer irons than the RAC CB. Much more forgiveness, and still excellent performance!

i've played my ftx's for a year now. great clubs. a bit low on the ball flight but the ball will have some bit to it. my only issue is the hosels have pulled out from the heads. any home fix ideas out there?

Sorry, I have not hit the Nikes and only hit the Hogans in a sim. So to add confusion to your process :cheesy: I highly reccommend checking out the Titleist 735.CM's. I've been loving mine. Surprisingly forgiving long irons and easy to work mid and short irons that are still fairly idiot-proof. I have the J33 combos as well, and the 735's are less demanding.
