Differences in golf ball distance

Was talking to a Titleist rep the other day and he told me that the range of distance off the tee between all golf balls currently on the market is 4 yards. I know I hit certain balls farther than others. Could I be wrong?

Gonna have to say that guy is wrong. To say the difference between a Pro V1 and a Pinnacle distance rock is +/- 4 yards is stupid

Course that's with the data from a robot...which hits it the same way every time. We humans aren't exactly that accurate. :russian_roulette:

I applaud Titleist's efforts to shove Pro V1s and Pro V1xs out the door, but half-truths shouldn't be what a company relies on to sell product. Not that Titleist has any issue selling balls as of the last few years.

For kicks I just took the data from Golf Digest ball test with drivers ([url="http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-equipment/golf-balls/2009-05/hotlistcriteria_golfballs?currentPage=2"]link[/url]) and entered the data for the extremes into some ball flight software. Assumed a 142 mph ball speed (96 mph club speed based on their test and a 1.48 estimated smash factor). I got a difference in carry distance of two yards. Don't know what the difference would be with roll, but I assume more than two yards.

He's right because Iron Byron under optimum conditions applies the same SS and optimum swing which imparts optimum spin; but you're right too.

How we hit a ball is different then Iron Byron. Reason I seldom pay attention to tests where IronB or even certain touring pros are used. I hit Callaway's i(z) farther then ProV1x, and TMTP Red LD's farther then last years Callaway IX. ProV1X farther the ProV.

Perhaps you misheard or misunderstood him or he meant to say "Among the premium, pro type balls" ??? :blink:

at a specific controlled swing speed, yes, there is no more than 4 yards in difference between all models.

SO, he is right.

This is not some scam marketing, it is a fact to show you how and to help you pick a golf ball.

Driver distance should not be the only factor.

It is fact, but too bad we humans swing differently all the time. We also play in uncontrolled environments where wind and humidity can make differences on the balls that we use too right?

actually I've seen numerious test where the max difference is 7 yards (and we;re talking flight distance, not with roll).
As I have been told by employees... most computer swing / ball analyst systems (at say Golf Galaxy, Edwin Watts) the programming data will only allow for like a 10 yards difference maximum.

Like I have preached for months now.... ball discussions and ball differences are WAY overblown.
