1 iron

So I went to 2nd swing this week and got me a 1 iron. It is a old mcgrger Oversize CB95. It cost me just under 8 bucks so I figure what the hell. Suprisingly I can hit it about 230 maybe some more. Just under my 5 wood. Now am I crazy stupid or just tradtional?

I think its great mr.titleist, i used to use a 990 1 iron when i played those irons and wish i still had one, i still prefer my 2 iron over a hybrid , i think there is nothing wrong with the idea.

as long as you can hit it fine (which it sounds like) then go for it!

now the question is, when did lee trevino say that? and what was a 1 iron loft then? i know irons have become stronger in loft over the years. todays 2 iron, may very well have been a 1 iron when trevino said this.

I dont know the loft I will put up some pics of it when I get a chance. But man I love it. I use it on this long into the wind par 3 at my course and have not missed a green with it yet.

Back when I didn't carry a utility club, I carried 1,3-PW. But since a 19* wood has been in my bag, I carry a 2,4-PW. My point? There's always a place for a low lofted club in your bag, but don't sacrifice a utility club for it.

i too had the 990s and used 1, 3-pw. i loved that club - +1" with a rifle 7.0(!). could hit it high, low, fade, draw, pretty much anything from the tee. i could hit a 'stinger' that stayed about 15 feet off the ground but went straight and long - perfect for shorter courses. but in the past few years, it just didn't work well with the new balls - not enough spin. also, forget about hitting it out of the rough!

 

i switched to a rescue 16, which is much better out of the rough, and produces a higher trajectory, but i just can't hit the stinger with it. of course, with the less spinny balls, you don't really need to hit it low to make it go through the wind well.

 

i was thinking of reshafting it with something a bit more sane (can't bend the 7.0 anymore) and giving it another whirl. for a long time, it was the 'go to' club in my bag off the tee.

John Daly reached that huge par 5 at Baltusrol with a Wilson Staff 0iron...yes...a zero iron. It had 13 degrees of loft and he hit it a little over 300 yards to reach it in two. That's crazy. No Point..just a nugget of information.

i own 2 different 1 irons...

 

I never use it, but i just keep it because it completes my full set :cheesy:

Nice story mr titleist,

if you can use a 1iron there's, no better feeling than hitting an iron out near your partners drives. It's a great weapon into the wind.

I recently changed irons from dci 990s 1-pw(popular set based on this thread), would often have the 1iron in the bag and not say anything to playing partners let them think it was a3iron. Most people wont expect you to be carrying one and it's fun to see the look on their faces when you hit a good one.

Only problem is you can forget about using it out of the rough- that's where you need a hybrid.

If my memory served, he didn't reach the green by 2 -- he over it by 2.

I saw the video..I think he carried a bunker, hit, then ran the whole length of the green, i think it stopped on the very end...either way it was a matter of inches. You may be right though.
