You can probably get on no problem at Torrey if you tee off before 7:30 AM. There is a process sort of like Bethpage Black, where you show up early in the morning and get a place in line to buy a tee time. I have done this once (rolled into the parking lot at 4:30 AM) and was the 9th person in line. Ended up joining a group and was in the first group out at dawn on a beautiful Sunday morning.

Below is the Torrey Pines official web site with info, including the course calendar, whcih unfortunately isn't showing February yet:

If you are playing as a single or twosome, you can typically just show up at Torrey Pines and put your name in and get called within an hour, especially mid-week. That gives you just enough time to hit some balls at the driving range and putt around. The North Course is typically available sooner than the longer and more prestigious South Course. Both are great and I typically just play the North. Most people will walk the courses and a 5 hour round is common.

Other courses in San Diego worth checking out include Aviara (which is pricey and in Carlsbad), Maderas (which is inland about 20 or 30 minutes), Barona Creek (also inland quite a bit). Encinitas Ranch is also fairly nice and will give you some decent ocean views. The Coronado Municipal golf course is easily the best value in San Diego, not the best course conditions, but spectacular views of downtown, right along the harbor.

If you really want a treat and you're willing to drive a couple hours, check out Pelican Hill. I hear it blows away Torrey Pines. Also, Palm Desert/Palm Springs is a little over 2 hours away, where they are currently playing the Bob Hope Classic (i.e. La Quinta, which adjoins Palm Desert). The course conditions are probably the best you can find anywhere, and weather is also perfect in early February - 70s, with snow capped mountains surrounding you.

The process if gettin on TPS has become far easier since they raised the rates. You used to have to wait at least 3-4 hours. Now you can get out in under 1 hour and often immediately. Just call ahead and make sure they do not have a tournament scheduled for the day you want to play.
