I had a charity event tourney where we would all play equipment from the 50s-60s. Being that my irons were already from the 50s, it was just a matter of getting the woods. I ended up using the driver below and hit it about 5-7 yards further than my modern 3 wood, but much more controlled. It was amazing! Enjoy the pics!

Brand new victory green cord grip!

From the looks of the face, I would say you certainly hit it on the screws! Good job! I should point out though that this driver is actually not 50s-60s vintage. Not sure of the exact year, but definitely made in the early to mid 1980s. Nice block nonetheless!

Haha, thank you sir for the help in finding one of these guys! Yes, they told me it was made in the 80s, but it would pass. So I got lucky!

The technology certainly did not change much from the 50s to the mid 80s as far as woods are concerned. Are you going to be gaming on a regular basis?
[/quote]

Haha, sadly not! I'm greedy for power and the modern drivers I use go 20-30 yards further. Not distance I can give up i'm afraid!

But I really enjoy taking an older balata ball and messing around with shaping the ball. Teaches me a lot about my swing for sure!

Will be on the look out for some Hogan woods. Just a matter of getting them refinished. I love persimmon! :partytime2:

Nice looking club.

Played with a 945W and 693 TA for many years. Still have the 693.

:cheesy: funny stuff.

PersimmonPal. I'm trying to reach you but you can't accept any new messages.
I'm looking to get some of these babies refinished and wanted to ask you about that.

Agreed. There's nothing like persimmon. I've found the distance gap is mainly with the driver. I've also come to the conclusion from my yearly "retro rounds" that with fairway woods, loft for loft there isn't much difference in distance, lower ballflight/ overall carry is less. But with quite a bit more roll, they seem to finish roughly in the same vicinity.

That driver was made in 1986. IMO its one of the best 80s MacGregor drivers. I have one as well and I really like it. Yours would look amazing refinished in rosewood stain that would show off the grain. Here is mine. I love the super tight grain on this block. It also sets up to the ball absolutely perfect. My buddy who is a Club pro used one of these in the late 80s and he loved it. Mine could use a refinish as well, the dummy marks on the top were not by me. :cheesy:

beautiful clubs, brings back memories when i was a kid
but as good as they look, todays clubs are so much easier and better to use

i used to have a vintage car and as nice as it looks, each time after taking it out for a spin i was that much more appreciated of the audi i'm driving
no contest in terms of ride dynamics, fit and finish, etc

i'm sure the analogy would be the same if i hit a persimmon again

Yes sir. The only thing is today's kids will never know what it really means or feels like to smash the ball right on the screws. Everyone has to experience that at least once!

Funny, I was just thinking about this analogy last week as I also happen to drive an audi and a semi-vintage car. I still enjoy driving in the older car more because I have so much more direct control over the machine.

Traction control and all those other fancy aids are here to help us, sure. But, not unlike 'game improvement' features such as offset and cavity backs they're also based on the premise that us users need them to be able to perform better.

To extend the analogy even further, I would go as far as to say that driving the audi makes me lazy in a sense. You won't notice this until you take a ride in the older car afterwards and you find that you're having trouble using the clutch or something similar.

To me it's like you grew up to hitting blades and persimmon and made a switch to cavity backs and a 460cc titanium driver. If you try to hit the blades afterwards you'll notice that it will take some time to get to your old level of ball striking. (No matter how good or bad that was tongue.gif )

Vandeloo - comparing cars to clubs is actually a wonderful analogy. If you read the car magazines, you will frequently hear the complaint about modern cars(particularly Lexus, et al) that they make drivers disconnected from the driving experience. I am also convinced that modern club-making has done something of the same thing to the hitting experience. Classic woods and irons force you to be more connected to your swing because you can't rely on the club to make up for your inadequacies.

Great point.

I love the older clubs. While the new drivers are awesome I kind of miss the personality that the old persimmon woods have. As a side note, a friend of mine and I were recently discussing the fact that the younger generation of golfers will never know the story behind the phrase "hit it in the screws."

Thanks smith5606,

tembolo, sorry about the threadjack.

I really like the headshape of that driver.

Sure looks better than those oversized cartoon drivers of today cheesy.gif
