Old School

Recommended Posts

Been a club ho' over the last three years but have decided a new approach this year. I've decided to go old school with a couple of clubs. Gonna game a ping isi tec driver and 17 degree orlimar. Just been caught up in newer is better recently. I'm sure I will revert to my old ways soon but wondered how many others are doing or have thought about it.

I say that going oldschool is great in some parts of the bag. In my opinion, the technology in irons and wedges hasn't proggressed much. I still game an old set of langert transitions from time to time and they hit it as good as anything today. On the other hand the technology in woods is always increasing. New drivers are more forgiving and longer. There are a few exceptions but for the mostpart I believe it's true. So going oldschool is great as long as you do it in the right part of the bag.

Every time I read one of these "going old school" posts, I have to wonder, why?. I played the Ping isi and the Orlimar back when they actually were the hot new things, and they weren't close to todays replacements in performance. Are you really good enough to trade performance to make a "fashion statement" with your clubs?

Reshafted a BB FW ´04 (19*) with a steel shaft (PX 5.0) and use it as "hybrid" in my wintersetup. This is one of my best sticks i ever owened. Cover the 2/3/4 iron distance and no need for for a FW.

[size="3"]I have actually been playing a set of Mizuno Trues this winter and I feel that they are as good as any of the clubs I have compared them to. I just had to adjust to lofts and purchase a mp32 pw because the True pw digs so much. It actually turned out to be a very good sand wedge. I have a set of combo x forged/ x proto that I will testing to see how they hold up against the old skool Trues.I think some ofthe old clubs were really good they just got dumped for new not better.

I'm well aware that performance in new equipment has improved. Not making a fashion statement playing old equipment. Back in 1986 when I was hitting a taylor made driver with a titanium shaft the feeling of a solid drive was not a lot different than some of the new drivers I've hit. I prefer the smaller size of driver heads and fairway woods as some of todays products are just too big. I guess it all depends on what fits each of our eyes and the hitting experience whichever club gives us.

Looked like brushed aluminum and was about twice the regular shaft thickness except for where it attached to the hosel. Played it for a good ten years.

I was thinking about doing something similar with a warbird of mine. What length steel shaft did you go with?

I will tell you something, some of the best shots I have had have been with older clubs from the 70's and 80's. Older wedges, drivers, and fairway woods. I have an old forged wedge from the 60's and it's pretty dope.

This place gets me in trouble. I read all the posts about all time best clubs and buy them. I have them reshated with shafts that work for me and that keeps me from always wanting to buy the latest and greatest, which I can't afford to do.

I hit the S2H2 Irons pretty well, and I like the looks of them. I hit the original steelheads pretty well too. I also have PING TiSI Tec Fairway woods that I love, and Taylor Made V Steels and 200 Steel Fairway Woods.

I have PING I5 and S58 Irons and Rapture and G5 Drivers,Rapture fairway woods and Adams Idea Pro hybrids. I still like the "old school" stuff!!!

That's where I'm at now. Working on a shaft replacement for the Tec to work on the spin issue. Any suggestions? Have a prolaunch red I'm thinking of putting in.

42 - our clubpro who is clubmaker too, assembled that combo for me, don´t know the SW, but this stick does so many things for me. Gave up my 3wood too.

A buddy has the same stick with a uniflex steel shaft - works great too.
