Wood Bros Tour Texan

Recommended Posts

used by B. Langer
Here is a late 1980's hand made Texan driver that Dave Wood just refinished. It came out really great. There was little to no sanding or repair needed, just a new stain, score lines refresh and about 3 coats of spray'd poly, although Dave put in many many hours on this and his process is very extensive. Bernhard Langer owned this driver in the late 80s and used it extensively from 1988 to 91 before Dave made him a custom. This is the only driver Dave Wood engraved his signature on. Its a very dense persimmon wood with excellent grain. Its a unique club and really one of a kind. Dave's goal at the time was to show this club to tour players as a new head shape. The insert on this one is also a bit wider than the typical Texan. It still has Langer's Victory grip and S500 shaft with band. Hope you like the pics. Dave also refinished a M85 for me. I'm going to post those pics later. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Here is the 1953 M85W Eye O Matic that Dave refinished. Its flawless and came out stunning. Dave was able to retain it's original neck number, the serial number Mac put on the neck. I really like the walnut stain, really shows off the grain. Both clubs really came out like a work of art. Love the classic persimmon drivers!

Wow! What a nice refinish.
How does Dave get all the little nicks and gouges out of the sole plate without making the sole plate as thin as a piece of paper AND without the undulations of a golf course green - how?
I hope I don't sound arrogant but someday I'd like to be able to refinish a M85
"just like that"!
Thanks for sharing Fred.

Max. I know the M85 is your favorite.. The sole plate was in probably 8.5 to 9 out of 10 condition to start with. It required very little sanding. There was a small ding on the edge of the sole plate at around 11 O'Clock on the edge that Dave easily banged out. I'm pretty sure he took the plate off, flipped it over and with a few taps the ding was all gone. Its not there anymore! Dave is going to have a refinish section on his site soon and will describe the best way to refinish woods. I'm sure people like you will benefit, I'd like to learn it too someday.

Fred:

WOW! That is a truly special club...and tight, 12:00 grain!

I am sure that is the same club I have some some pictures of in a special file. I used to keep the fold out swing sequences of players who I really liked and/or admired their game. Bernhard fit all those categories. I have some pictures of him from the 1980's/90's swinging his Texan driver....wow!

Thanks for sharing, truly one of the most special woods out there.

Thanks, Fred. Lawson

I'm glad you guys enjoyed the pics. Thanks for your feedback. This forum has such a great group of people and so many are so knowledgeable in the area of clubs, refinishing, ect, its a great place to share these pics and great classic clubs. Nspiel,.. I'm glad you have a little collection of the pics. My hard drive also has probably over 4 to 500 pics too I'd say, lol.

I let Dave dictate the details done on these clubs, with little input. The gold and white toe stamp was his idea, which I also really like. Dave sprayed these clubs outdoors in Houston over the last several weeks and had less than perfect weather conditions, so he was delayed many weeks because of the freezing weather down there. It was worth the wait to have these clubs done by such a great craftsman-artist. I spoke to him today and he said his golf section of his website might be up over the next few days. It'll describe refinishing in great detail.

Fred, both the Texan and M85W turned out fantastic! Dave did a terrific job on those. Both blocks are about as good as it gets and are a pleasure to see pictures of. Thanks for sharing!!!
