First GPS System

Recommendations?

I'm in the market for a dedicated GPS system because I don't really wanna keep using my smart phone for it. These are the requirements I'm looking for.

1. Basic - Just distance to front/middle/back
2. Compact
3. No subscription fees
4. Very good battery life

Right now I'm leaning toward the Bushnell Neo+. Anyone have anything bad to say about it?

I understand your wants are basic… but when it comes to non-subscription standalone GPS units I think the best players by far are Callaway and Garmin.

I wouldn't describe the Garmins as compact so I would look at the uPro Go, or maybe wait for the uPro MX due out this May.

Another good fit might be the new Garmin S1 watch, but I am not sure the battery life will make you happy.

I just checked out the callaway units and it does seem like a good option. The interface is much more busy with the actual photos and I'm unsure that I would use/like it. Is there a specific reason to go with the callaway over the bushnell? Perhaps with the callaway I wouldn't have to buy a new unit if I decided in the future to use more than just the F/M/B.

The Neo is amazing. Had mine for couple years and works awesome! Love the size of it.

Well that is one consideration. But I think the most important one is support. Bushnell is using a third party for their GPS stuff and there have been concerns voiced here. I just have a tough time considering a unit from any but the "big three" (Sky, Cally, and Garmin). It is simply a matter of whether they have the resources to do what they say they're gonna do..

I asked SonoCaddie two years ago about Mac support and they said it was coming in a few months. Two years later and nuthin'.

Have you looked at the Garmin S1? If I just wanted F/C/B I would think that is the ideal. Hell, I have a G5 and am still thinking about getting one of these for courses I play often.

You can get upros cheap right now. I have one, very compact.

The photos you are referring to are part of ProMode. That is something you pay extra for. While I like it, the basic mode is free. The real power of the Pro Mode is the AnyPoint, which lets you quickly figure out layup distances (or to any point on the course). But you can always decide later if you want it (think they give you 3 pro mode downloads to try).

The upro go is more basic, and you have the ability to do any point but only on the green.

I just looked at the S1 and I do also like this option. I've never played with a watch on before so I don't know if it would feel awkward or not. It looks a little chunky so I'll definitely need to see it in person to see the actual size. Now I'm pretty much between the Neo+ and the S1.
