Yes,

An open face at 8.5º will play effectively less than 8.5º. Anytime you open the face on a driver you effectively deloft it, because in order to square it you shut the face down. The option you do have if you want a driver to play 8.5º at 1-2º open is to get a 10.5 that is such. Wouldnt even have to get a tour issue, if you are bending the face then the "closed" face retails become irrelevant because you're opening it. That, however, is another story, but yes, you will change the effective loft if you have any face open.

I'm currently playing a 9.5* ignite 460 with v2 75x, which i hit quite high, not detrimentally high.(great head/shaft combo, though face is starting to lose a little pop) i'm of the understanding that the ignite 460 is a slightly open face, maybe 1*...? i've recently committed to changing my ball flight from a draw to a power cut, so i want a driver with a slightly open face, but since i hit the ball very high, i'd like to bring it down slightly without going to a heavier shaft or beyond an x flex. i'd like something that plays to 8 or 8.5* with a 1* open face, could i do that by going with a 9.5 and only 1 degree open? what's the formula for face angle and effective loft, and will i have to get a tour issue to get this combo of specs. sorry if i repeated some questions or if i failed to make the connection with your first response, appreciate your quick attention to my post, anxious to hear more. thanks

Yes, the degrees open, will equate to the amount the club is effectively delofted. So if you want one that is 1º open that plays to about 8.5º you can go with a 9.5º and only 1º open, if you wanted 2º open 10.5º etc. Each degree open will equal approximately 1º loss in effective loft. Each degree shut will add approximately 1º of loft. No you don't need "tour issue" to get this combo. You can buy a retail head and have it bent open, if you so desire. Something like the 905R doesnt have a ton of internal bias so bending it open wouldnt be counteracted by some internal bias. If you have any questions just pm me or head into the clubmakers chat and pm me and I'd be glad to help you out.

Thanks,

Adam

Not sure on that but I have hard that people did it. My understanding is that its because it is not like bending an iron, the head doesnt move forward or backwards like when you add loft to a wedge. They rotate the head open basically when they bend it rather than forwards or backwards. I'm not sure exactly how it was done, but I do remember someone here having had a 905S or T ,cant remember which, bent. They may also re epoxy the aluminum tube somehow. It is not like changing lie where the shaft would prevent it from moving up or down. I do not know the details on the "how" with the 905 specifically but Ive played with a titleist staffer whos had their 905S bent open. Thats something left to the pros to explain on how to do this with the 905, so Ill throw the how over to them.

Titleist 905's (or indeed any thru-bore wood heads with no hosel) are NOT "bent" open at all. They are shimmed open........

Just like a shim used to fit a .335 shaft into a .350 hosel for instance. For example different size brass shims are available with "fingers" that make up the sides of the shim (most of the time there are 4 or more individual fingers).Cut one,or a few of these fingers off and rather than the shim being uniform in size and round in shape so that the shaft sits in the head dead-square,it is now effectively eliptical and the shaft will now NOT sit in the hosel square and uniformly.A clubs loft for example is a measurement (ie: the difference) between the angle of the hosel and the clubface. If this angle is changed via the shim the clubs loft can also be changed. However lie and face angle can of course also be done.

So the shim can be fitted with the cut-out fingers at different orientations ie: North, south,East,West or anywhere inbetween to increase or decrease loft or to alter the face angle etc.

Not rocket-science but certainly a job left to someone with some experience of fitting these.........

i'm considering buying a tour issue 905R but i need a 1-2* open face. my question is, @ 8.5*(or any loft for that matter) will an open face angle change the effective loft of the club or alter anything about the clubs playing characteristics other than the face angle? :kewlpics:

thanks ya'll

josh

Have you hit a driver that is 1-2* open to see if this is how you plan on going from your draw to a power fade? I am not trying to sound like an Word not allowed but this seems to be one of the posts I see here where someone is convinced they need a specific spec that they have heard a theory on how it would affect their game. If your Ignite is a degree open already, will a driver that is merely the same or one degree different make a huge impact? If it's a retail driver, there exists a chance that the specs are off a bit form what the catalog says they are, right?

If it is what you need, I am sure someone (not me) can point you in the right direction, this place has so much collective info and contacts through the members, it's ridiculous.

Adam, you seem to have a pretty good handle on the process of this all, but I was wondering... you indicated that if you bend open a driver, you are making essentially delofting it, as you will need to be closing the clubface down to return the face angle to square to hit the ball. Doesn;t the bending process open the face? So if you bend a 10.5 open, doesn;t the loft increase, thus when you have to close it at impact to square it, it returns to 10.5? All this face angle and sutff makes my dizzy at times.

I understand your confusion MA. People see irons bent all the time, and when doing so the relationship of the face and the vertical plane of the hosel, meaning the shaft or the plane stretching from the ground to the sky, changes. This is because the iron has offset, and this process can be done. In the process of doing so, you change the offset AND loft of the club.

When bending woods, there is no offset, and thus you cannot move the face in relation to the vertical plane of the club, same ground to sky plane. You are actually changing the relationship of the face in the horizontal plane, i.e. parallel to the ground. You are basically pushing or pulling, however you want to look at it, the toe away from the target. The relationship of the face to the ground does not change at all, like it does when you bend an iron. You are not pushing the shaft forwards or backwards and changing offset and loft like an iron, and thus no dynamic loft is added or subtracted. The loft change comes from effective loft; the loft at impact. Thus your 10.5º driver, stays 10.5º whether you bend it open or closed bc the face isnt changing in relationship to the ground, just to the target. The change comes bc in order to square it you must either open or close the face thus leaning the shaft forward or backward, which does basically same thing as when you bend an iron.

I know its weird and hard to understand but basically it stems from the wood not having offset and not being bent forwards or backwards like an iron, but rotating the toe closer or farther from the target.

Any more questions feel free to pm me.
