Jhonny Vegas's Nunchuk

Recommended Posts

shaft wobble, droop, torque
I've been using this new Nunchuk shaft for a couple of months now and it is like day and night against all the other shafts that droop, deflect, torque, and wobble. People don't realize that when the shaft flexes, it flexes PERPENDICULAR to the club face==so the "kick" is toe to heel and NOT back to front as imagined all along. For those of us strong enough to make the shaft stress, it becomes a fight for stability and squaring. For those of us not able to stress a shaft, we wouldn't want to give up our control and stability either.
Long story short, consumers are being sold a bill of goods with the light, lighter, and lightest flexible shafts. Get a stiff shaft, get the swing weight over D4, and take comfort in the feeling of the head and face staying where they belong.

I think if that shaft was so great there would be more than two people on tour using them. I've been a club maker and club pro for about 12 years. I've seen thousands of swings in frame by frame slow motion and I've never seen the shaft flex or "kick" in any particular direction for all players as you're suggesting. The shaft is round and flexes in all directions relative to a particular players face angle at the top so if that angle is not square then no shaft is flexing perpendicular to the face.

I do agree with a heavy super stiff driver though for pretty much all players.

There are a lot more than 2 players using them now. Just last week 4 more pros put them into play. Getting more use in fairways and hybrids. Sned used one in his A12 hybrid as you could see on TV.

Yep. Actually, dozens are using it, but some manufacturers won't allow them to announce it so they paint it. LOTS of senior tour guys, actually..including the very straightest and last year's POY.
BTW, I am not trying to sell it..just letting you all know there is a new game in town. And it does behave differently than all the rest of its competition.

I've noticed the shaft moving forward prior to impact on some of the slo-mo video on TV. I was really blown away by a picture of Lorena Ochoa at impact in one of my magazines, the head of her driver was way out front of her shaft just before impact. So this technology makes a lot of sense... However, I'd really like to hear from some people who've hit this and see if it's just straight or does it really add distance as well... I read one review that said crazy straight but lost about 5 yards. I've got good control with my RIP, I'd like the control with more distance...

I tried one and my swingspeed is 90, nothing special, straight but I lost 5-10 yards over my 65 gram HD6 so bye bye it went. Wild swinger in our league love it as it tamed down his swing.

I know nothing about the Nunchuk, but can tell you that sort of picture is purely an artifact of the rolling shutter in the camera. Doesn't happen in real life.

Incorrect.

You make a compelling case. rolleyes.gif

You can easily demonstrate this simply by changing the orientation of the camera. Which column of images do you think corresponds most closely to reality?

Stretch, how many frames per second?

The phenomenon is a product of the image processing algorithms used in slower frame rate cameras to keep similar coloured pixels together rather than having a smeared image.

You'll notice that you won't see the same kind of results on 1000+ fps cameras, such as the Phantom cameras used for slo-mo footage at tour events.

I agree that the scan pattern massively affects the level of image distortion, but surely even you can see the forward bend in the shaft in the third image from the top?

I'm a regular hitter - have a Speeder 750 (heavier shaft) in a 9.5' R510 head. I love the feel of this combination. I've always been trying to make a duplicate. Maybe in a Nunchuk - but the price is high, especially in the two reviews above (muted feel). I'm experimenting with an Excaliber tour shaft before I try a Nunchuk. Heard a lot about them - just not willing the pull the trigger on that price point.

I'm sorry - you may know precisely what YOU need to use in a shaft (which is great), but in no way can you assume that because you hit any one particular shaft very well that it automatically is for all golfers or that lighter weight shafts are automatically bad for golfers. There is just far, far too much data out there over years and years with many, many golfers that says your sweeping generalizations are not correct.

If a golfer has exactly the same swing you have, then yes, you can say the shaft you like might be OK for him. But even with that, if the golfer with the same swing as you has a different perception and preference for the bending FEEL of the shaft, he is not going to like what you like. If the golfer has a different swing speed, different transition force, different downswing tempo/aggressiveness and different point of wrist-c o c k release than you do, then there is no way you can assume they will play well with the same shaft you play well with.

In addition, ALL shafts bend in the toe up/toe down plane as well as the back/front forward bending plane at the same time. They most definitely can and will bend in the two different planes in different amounts, depending on the bend profile design of the shaft combined with the downswing force/tempo and point of release of the golfer. But all shafts most assuredly will bend in these two different planes at the same time.

There is no question whatsoever the shaft has to be matched to the INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENT SWING CHARACTERISTICS OF EACH DIFFERENT GOLFER. If the golfer has a definite preference for the bending feel of a shaft, this too has to become an important part of the shaft fitting process beyond fitting the shaft's weight/overall stiffness/bend profile/torque/weight distribution to the golfer's clubhead speed, transition force, downswing tempo, point of release and overall golf strength.

It's truly great when a golfer comes upon a shaft change that really makes a positive difference in their ball striking. Congratulations on that for sure. But please do not misdirect your excitement about finding your perfect shaft for your swing into an incorrect statement that could mislead many other golfers.

TOM
