Tommy Armour Silver Scott 986 Tour Blades

Any feedback out there about these forged blades? Also curious of the year of the 986 model. Very nice looking club.

I've owned over a half dozen sets throughout the years. Still have a set with G. Loomis Tour X shafts, DLIII specs.

Over the years, I've switched to other forgings, but always seem to come back to these.

Anybody has info on the year and especially specs of (exactly) these blades? If not, maybe on similar TA irons from the those years? I could not find doing online searches.

The production years is a fairly easy question. 986 Tours were from 1986 to 1995. The first model year had "PGA" stamped in the sole.

Specs is a matter of conjecture, but considering the time they originated and the visual of the bounce, they were probably either 20°/30°/50° for 2i/5i/PW or 19°/29°/49° for 2i/5i/PW. Or, if you prefer, they matched up with Wilson Staff FG-17 lofts or FG-51 lofts.

They were known for no offset, and might even have onset. It's an interesting visual, for sure.

After playing my first set several years ago, I found myself thinking my Golden Rams had a ton of offset. They don't, but once you're accustomed to looking down at 986 Tours, everything has offset. LOL

Thanks for responding and the info. I have a set of these. The shafts are stepped but not DG and dont have any labels, but from what I read could be rifles. I dont hit them very far at all. The lofts are high and you confirmed that, thank you. I am very intrigued by them and was wondering if I replace with a bit lighter shafts I could enjoy them? Right now I dont, even though I play blades half of the time and have actually better scores during those rounds.

I thought I was in the classic section for a minute, look like some winners and you can probably find a set for next to nothing.

There were some really superb forged clubs done by TA, like this one - the EVO cavity done by Miura.

Rifle shafts are stepless

Ok, I didnt know that - never seen them (been playing for 5 years). Maybe these are DG shafts I have after all. In any case feels like too much of a club for my swing.

They could also be Precision stepped shafts. They were the first shafts produced by the company that ultimately became Royal Precision.

Precision shafts were used by many manufacturers in the 80s and 90s, as either an option or a stock shaft.

The EVO-25 are outstanding and will rivial anything in their class , past or present.I played them when they came out ( in the bag for about 6 years) and still have that set along with a barely used spare set that needs bent and reshafted. I play Callaway protos and can seemlessly slip the TA in the bag. As a matter of fact I plan on doing so later this year just for fun. The set is progressive and even on the top end the cavity isnt what most people would call a cavity but still not difficult to hit. If anyone finds a set in good shape do yourself a favor and pick them up.

Just be sure to get the 25's and not the 31s

After you guys told me here about the lofts, I replaced my MBs 712 8,9, Pw with 7,8,9 of these for a round. Same distances, nice experience - the shaft (precision fcm I think now) was very "vibrant". I really liked it. Too bad pitching with that 9 was a disaster for me. There are 13 steps including under the grip on the shafts, could it be possible to confirm it is precision fcm?
