Sergio Garcia Issues Ryder Cup Challenge

The war of words has begun.

Most of the golfing world is familiar with Tiger Woods’ reaction to slights, either real or perceived. Ask Vijay Singh, whose caddy wore a hat that said “Tiger Who?” during their singles match in the 2000 Presidents Cup – a systematic 2 & 1 loss for Singh. Ask Stephen Ames, who referred to Woods’ poor driving prior to their match in the WGC Match Play – an 9 & 8 spanking. There have been other instances. And afterwards, Woods always lets it be known that those sort of things help him get greater focus.

This time it’s the petulant Sergio Garcia who has thrown down the gauntlet, inviting a monster performance from El Tigre. Garcia had this to say about Woods in an interview prior to the Omega Masters, “Fortunately for us, he doesn’t have a great Ryder Cup record so I’m looking forward to hopefully going out there and meeting him two or three times.”

I'm guessing that Woods already has that article posted on his refrigerator door, so he'll have to read it every day. Be prepared, Sergio, be very prepared.

Wow. That is a pretty bold statement. Especially the way Tiger has been dominating of late. Hopefully it helps fuel Tiger and I'm sure it will.

even more so with the way sergio performed playing with woods in the british open and the way sergio has been putting.

This is why there's just no more good journalsim these days, they're ALWAYS looking for the next feud story instead of real news.

I'm glad Sergio said it. What is he supposed to say? "Tiger's unbeatable, I hope I never have to play him, I'm not even going to bother showing up at the K club."

Journalism is dead . . . . :idhitit:

Anything can happen in match play, especially w/ partners.

With that said, Sergio has a nasty habit of his mouth writing checks his a** can't cash.

Ryder Cup records

Sergio 10-3-2

Woods 7-11-2

So Sergio has a 11 (10 wins plus 2 halves)/15 (73.3%) record, Tiger has 8/20 (40%) record.

Sergio is qualified to say what he likes about the Ryder Cup and about Tiger Woods playing in it.

I never questioned his qualifications, just his overall golf abilities........Ryder Cup aside.

Perhaps Sergio should consider every tournament the "Ryder Cup" and maybe he'll win.

Sergio Garcia/Jesper Parnevik, Europe, def. Tom Lehman/Tiger Woods, U.S., 2 and 1 in 1999 in the Foursome matchup

Tiger Woods/Davis Love III, U.S., def. Sergio Garcia/Lee Westwood, Europe, 1-up in 2002 in the Fourball matchup

Lee Westwood/Sergio Garcia, Europe, def. Tiger Woods/Mark Calcavecchia, U.S., 2 and 1 in 2002 in the Foursome matchup

They have never gone head to head in a singles matchup though.

Well the US team didn't concoct anything, I have no idea how they were dragged into this. This has to do with Tiger's competitive nature. Yes Sergio was stating the truth and he didn't say anything wrong, but it wasn't the wisest approach. Everybody knows what happens when Tiger gets up for a match. He killed Ames. The fact that he lost the next match has nothing to do with Ames shooting off his mouth and Tiger responding to his comments by destroying him on the course If you don't think Tiger is going to use this to get up for this matches, you don't understand Tiger. If I was Sergio, I would have danced around the question asked about Tiger. I would have said something like...geez I'm not sure what his record is but everybody knows he is the number 1 ranked golfer in the world...... and leave it at that.

I agree with you this is just the press stirring the pot again. My point with Tiger is that he is one guy you don't want to throw sand in his face. he is so intense that if he even thinks you are doing that, look out! he is amazing, he isn't bullet proof, he can lose and odes have a losing record in the R.C., but he is an amazing athlete. The U.S. is definitely the underdog this year and we need all the help we can get!

You are right - the US team did not concoct this. But the US golf press did.

Actually, if you check the link, it was The Canadian Press and this is what we call trash talk.

"Fortunately for us he doesn't have a great Ryder Cup record," Garcia said. "So I'm looking forward to hopefully going out there and meeting him two or three times."

The fist part is fact, Tiger does not have a great Ryder Cup record. The second part is Sergio believes that Tiger is an easy target and hopes to face him to get an easy win. Lets hope they go head to head every match play and see where the chips fall.

It sounds like it is shaping up to be a fun event.

I agree 100%. True, Tiger does not have a great Ryder Cup record. Perhaps he doesn't give a sh*t about it, that's his prerogative. But for Sergio to think that past performances in the RC is his chance to take on Tiger, he's sadly setting himself up for failure. To my knowledge, Tiger hasn't played this well going into any RC of the past, so things may get stirred up a bit this time.

On another note, I don't think we'll get this pairing b/c Tom won't waste Tiger's talent on Sergio. He'll want him for the best singles match, and paired with Jim for the hottest 4-man.

On a side note, I like Sergio to a certain degree. He can be firey and fun to watch. Yet, on the other hand, he thinks he deserves the treatment of a World #1 player with only top 10 play.

I said this a few days ago in a different post and I will say it again now, Sergio is a moron... He has a lot of nerve to challenge someone elses game when he couldn't putt his way out of a paper sack.

How can you say he's a moron? You know him do you? You kow people who know him? No? Didn't think so.

What you could have said is "Sergio's comments are mornic" which may well be you opinion and if so fine. But don't call someone something if you don't know them.

Besides, he was asnwering a question!! Can't people understand that? Journalists have a job to do, and he answered. I say good on him. If it makes for a better Ryder Cup then it's a good thing. And nothing he said was wrong. He wasn't Tiger baiting, just saying Tiger doesn't have a great record in the Ryder Cup - which he doesn't. And Sergio seems to save some of his best for this event, so who knows he may well be able to take Tiger on and beat him.

I'm really looking forward to it this time around, the teams look quite closely matched IMO - the US have some solid experience up top, combined with a number of rookies. Europe havee a lot of experience, and a couple of top 10 ranked players combined with some rookies.

GO EUROPE.
