Stiff or regular?

Depends on your transition and results with regular. 104 is certainly fast enough for stiff flex, but if you have a very smooth transition, regular may work for you. Some people like a little more whip in their shafts.

How is your dispersion and ball flight with regular. Best reason to move to stiff would be if your dispersion is wide, or if you are ballooning the ball with the regular shafts.

If it's available, the mizuno optimizer is a good place to start.

+1 for Mizuno fitting, even if you're not getting the irons.

I have a similar swing speed, and had a similar dilemma. Used the Mizuno fitting club, it suggested S300s, so that's what I got to replace my R300s. Feel like I've gained accuracy and no loss of distance. But most importantly, it's taken away that nagging feeling in my head of "have I got the right shafts?"

Have a similar dilemma with driver too. Swing speed suggests I should be a stiff, but I much prefer and use a regular YS6 shaft, which is supposedly a weak regular too.

my ss is right around 100mph, and ive been playing stiff flex on my driver.
a few weeks ago, i swung several drivers with regular flex shafts, and fell in love with them.
i liked them because they were lighter, and i especially loved the whipping action.
this week, i will be installing ust mamiya mp5 regular flex on my sf2.0tp which currently has the stock stiff flex shaft.
i cant wait!

I agree you're going to have to really try both to know what's best for you. Everyone's going to be a little differrent.

I'm right at the same swing speed and reg flex shafts drive me crazy - especially in irons. Even the stiff tfc's graphite's from ping were too soft for me in my i5's, always felt a little 'sloppy' in the control. Now I'm using some vs-proto stiff's and am much happier.

Try them both because the monikers are meaningless across company lines, a stiff in one companies shaft can play softer than another companies regular. Plus 95 to 105 is tweener land so it is always safer to try both at a range where you can see actual ball flight. This can be supplemented with launch monitors but not replaced in my opinion and the optimizer is next to useless in my experience and I would never select a set of clubs using only that. Having said that, you will most likely be in a stiff in the razrs as the stock shaft is a bit on the softer side, if you decide to upgrade to vs proto then you will be in between and need to hit to see which you prefer.

Actually, the stock steel shafts in the Razr X's are uniflex (can't choose stiff or regular). So stiff or regular will depend on if you want to upgrade and if so, which shaft you choose to upgrade to.

Edit: I think razr x tours and razr x forged are the only ones in the razr line that don't use the uniflex for stock steel.

What does uniflex mean? Is Regular or Stiff or both or neither?

Callaway Mavrik Max 10.5°
Callaway XR 16 3 wood
Callaway Mavrik Max 3 thru 5 hybrids
Srixon z565 6 thru PW
48°, 52° & 58° Cleveland CBX wedges
Ping Sigma 2 Kushin C flat stick

All subject to change in the blink of an eye.........and I blink a lot.

It means "stay away" :D
On the contrary. the uniflex shaft is very good for a majority of golfers, me included.
Supposedly, the faster the swing speed, the stiffer the shaft plays.
It works for me. I think its a good shaft,

It's supposed to mean all flexes. Will it be right for you? Only way to tell is to try it. If it doesn't work, it's not difficult to upgrade to a different shaft (maybe ~$10-15 per club).

SS 99-105.
Irons FST 115 Stiff
Hybrids Prolaunch Blue Stiff
Fairways Proforce V2 Regular
Driver Proforce V2 Regular

The driver feels better with the regular, I swing 70% on all shots, smooth transaction, very high ball flight.
Try some to feel what is right for you, don't feel that you have to play a certain flex based solo on numbers.

I am also borderline reg vs stiff on most driver shafts...i opt for stiff so i don't need to worry about 'timing' the flexy reg shaft through impact.

I'm a 96 SS with the driver and about 82 with a 6i. I'm playing a Stiff in the driver, and like most have said, I prefer the control aspect of that a bit more than the negligible loss of distance.

That said, I just got fitted last week for iron shafts. They started with the Mizuno method already mentioned. I loved it since it took into account SS plus your transition. I've always played DG S300 and got fitted for Project X 5.0's. Played the first round with them today and couldn't be happier.

But as always, I'd recommend a good fitting to make sure all's good :)

The whole concept of the Uniflex shaft by Callaway is trash is nonsense. I was not a fan of the old Memphis 10 shaft they used - but I play the Razr X irons and have the stock uniflex and I like them very much - they hold up just fine to my tweener swing speed with a 6i of 80 mph - I get plenty of control, height, and good feel - I tried all sorts of shafts at the Callaway Performance Center - and at the end of the day the stock set up with a slight lie adjustment was the best of the bunch for my swing.

I do play a stock stiff in the Razr Fit driver - I tend to load / transition hard / quick - so the stiff works better for me - and I have found at least in that shaft stiff is not all that stiff at all - I actually got better numbers and distance with the stiff vs the regular thanks to better ball contact - the regular was deflecting a little too much and lagging in the hitting zone so the face was actually staying open a little bit and causing me to push the ball - which is against normal thinking of hitting a shaft that is too soft can lead to hooks / pulls - my driver speed is about 98 mph

My SS is near yours (102) and I've toyed around with Regular shafts in all my clubs. Universally, they feel better. Also universally, the quality of my impact (ie, consistency of center contact) goes down. I now have stiff shafts in all my clubs except my two hybrids.
Just exactly what do you mean by "transition"?

???????????????? That always puzzled me, along with the word "feel" in the golf swing.

I think everyone should have to post a verifiable handicap along with each post.

That reminds of a guy I used to work with who said everyone should have their net worth in big numbers on top portion of their car windshields.

I'd like to know the reasons why he and you would say that.

One shaft [background=rgb(237, 237, 237)]Tour AD DJ [/background]R1, the other a stiff RIP Alpha 60 Wood.

Overall I like the stiff better, more control.

I have a 104-114 swing speed depending on how much I go after the ball and play regular shafts. Something in my flawed swing sends stiff shafts off to the right of my target but regular allows the face to close earlier and straighten out the shots. I'm no expert and everyones swing is different but this has been my experience and it works for me.
