which professional golfer was it that asked Hogan to sign his copy of modern fundamentals and before doing so Hogan thumbed through a few pages like he'd never seen it before? ie perhaps didn't write it but as some have suggested was written by sports illustrated and included what they thought would sell. correct me if i'm wrong but the book arose out of resolution of a dispute over a magazine series, he also received a cash settlement. Hogan has allegedly said that if he wrote an instruction book it would be this thick (spreading his thumb and forefinger as wide as it could go). he didn't suffer fools and even if he did write the book he wouldn't have been in the most forthcoming of moods. apologies if this issue has been argued ad nauseam around here which i suspect it has.
Well, Hogan did not "write" Five Lessons. As we have always known the writing was done by Herbert Warren Wind based on the input, thoughts, and ideas expressed to him by Hogan. HWW writes about their collaboration in his preface to 5L.

Incidently, I am privileged to have a copy of Five Lessons personally inscribed to me and autographed by Ben Hogan. I find it hard to believe he would have put his hand to something of which he did not approve.

I thought the trivia piece here was when asked years afterwards if he would change anything in 5Ls he said no, nothing
Correct, JD.

PF, sounds like Faldo to me per Vasquez.
Yes, it was Faldo via Vasquez. I have heard that one about not changing 5 lessons but he is hardly going to say otherwise when put on the spot. As it is the book has a bias towards hitting it left to right but I heard along the grapevine that had they put in what Hogan wanted to it wouldn't have sold because it would make people worse and so wouldn't be recommended to friends, generate success stories etc. If this is all true it would make sense to conclude that for Sports Illustrated it was about wanting to sell millions of copies rather than satisfy the insatiable curiosity of Hogan enthusiasts who in the larger scale are not great enough in number if profit is the objective.

i'm aware of that, I'm sure he had major input, I think there may be a possibility though that it was filtered and shaped somewhat to gain mass appeal.

Possible, but without supporting evidence just speculation.

If anything the evidence supports that 5 Lessons was the expression of the thoughts of Ben Hogan.

One other piece of evidence that supports this: the copyright for 5 Lessons was issued to Ben Hogan. Not to Herbert Warren Wind, Sports Illustrated, or any other person or entity.
That means Hogan had complete control over its publication. Again, from what we know of Hogan do you believe he would have allowed publication of a book on the golf swing that did not accurately reflect his thoughts?

I know he's very meticulous and proud in other areas of life but did say to Jackie Burke when he was helping someone on the range, "Why would you help him? We don't need more guys out here to beat." I think there is an element of it's a struggle and dog eat dog world in his personality. If he doesn't want one to be helped it's unlikely he'd give it all to the rest of the world. All being thousands upon thousands of hours of building a game that caused great hardship to hi early in his career.

"Fella".

I dont remember why though. :(
My memory of that is that the first time it happened Arnie had said something about who he might be playing during the Ryder Cup in which Hogan was captain (1967 I think) and Hogan said, "you're not on the team yet fella".

You guys are correct about "fella". It was kind of a trick question as I really don't know the WHY ... just trying to get some insight. Heck, I'm not sure even Arnie knows or he's just not telling.

Perhaps, Mr. H resented Arnie replacing him as golf's king of the mountain or that Arnie's swashbuckling style rubbed the meticulous and reserved Mr. H the wrong way? College boy v. hard scrabble high school drop out? Arnie was also known to get pretty hot with the flat stick occasionally while Mr. H's putting skills had badly deteriorated. The Ryder cup flyover?

All of these, none of these, different reasons?

What was Hogan's favorite book (to read)?

Hint: it was a mental book, perhaps the secret to his mid-latter career success?

What is the answer to this question?

So let me get this straight.

Hogan was afraid that someone would read his instruction book and improve their game to the point that they could challenge him and take money out of his pocket.

To prevent this from happening he filled 5 Lessons with disinformation to throw us off the track.

Is this your contention?

5Ls contained several new concepts and innovative illustrations. Of course every work is a condensed version of something but I don't find it dumbed down or misleading at all. Quite the opposite all things considered

Who spoke to Milton Hershey to give Hogan the Golf Pro position at Hershey CC and how long was he there?

Henry Picard.

1941-43, 1945-?

Picard is correct, and according to the recent Milton Hershey biography, Hogan represented the Hershey CC for 10 years. Many old

Regarding the Palmer thing....I always got the sense he thought hogan was a bit of a weenie. He acknowledged he was a good player...but he said it doesn't hurt to be a good player and also be nice. Is it because of this 'fella' thing? That's funny. But ya...I could imagine hogan being a bit of a salami to this dude if he was the new up and coming dude that was essentially de-throning him from the top position.

When _____________ won The Colonial he received the customary, rather loud, plaid winner's jacket.

As was the tradition he was wearing it at the champion's dinner. In a loud voice he said to the group he was mingling with, "How long do I have to wear this &%^#$*@ jacket?"

From close behind him, but out of direct sight, Mr. Hogan replied, "Until I say you can take it off, son."

Who was this Colonial winner?
