GolfShot GPS for iPhone. Don't leave home without it. Seriously... don't.. it's that good. Plus it's a one time fee, ie no yearly subscriptions.

Three I would recommend and use

Golfshot GPS - V3 now has club distances recording
iPing - Great for Putting practice
V1 or TW from Goldshot too - Record your swing
The rest are just takes on each other.

You don't need the official iPing cradle, get a hard case for the phone, cut a few slots in the back, use Velcro for two straps, atatch to teh shaft, then slide it up to the grip.

Then add Golf Channel app for news, PGA app for tournaments and if you intertsed in Europe EPGA App

Steve

Just got the iphone 4s a few days ago, and downloaded GolfShot today. I played 18 holes this afternoon at the local course, which is a local muni with no yardages aside from the 150 and sometimes 200 - yard markers. After one round, I think it's love at first sight, and having my scorecard waiting for me in my email inbox when I got home was icing on the cake.

+1 It's seriously worth it. Get the free version first of you need to, but once you can spring for it, get the GPS version. It's great.

Golfshot GPS ia an awesome app. Tons of courses, great features, nice layout.

The Swingreader app is nice too, with some modern swings to compare. The V1 app is great too...similar to the Swingreader but it has tons of examples (albeit older videos).

And yes download the USGA or R&A rule book too.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention these. As far as training aids go, Golf Plan, Tiger's My Swing, and Putt Maker are three great apps which have recently helped shave a few strokes off my game. Definitely worth the download. Go get 'em!

It's pretty simple and easy to use. There are literally zero buttons or anything you need to tap on the app. You just place the iPhone or iPod on the green and it tells you the direction and magnitude of the slope. I have been placing it on the green about 1/2 way between the ball and the cup (but I guess on a double-break you could put it in two spots). Now, for me personally, I don't break it out on every green by any means, but on some of them that I thought I knew the break and tried the app it really surprised me how much I was off. You know how some greens can be deceptive. The app became a favorite for me when it scored me a birdie. It was a tough putt across a slope and I decided to give the app a try and was sure glad when I did, because it made me realize I needed to compensate more than I thought and I sunk the putt for birdie. Well worth the 99 cents IMO. That right there is why I'm a fan of the app and recommend it to a couple golf buddies and on this thread.

One thing I think people who get this app should do to really get the most out of their $1, is to use it on the practice green a bit. When the app indicates a certain degree of slope, how much does that mean you need to adjust in your shot? It takes a little practice to get that dialed in, and it's probably different for each person and to some extent different in each case, but for the most part I can now see a certain slope indicated on the app and know how much I need to adjust. Again, this app doesn't sink the putts for you, but it does provide useful information that you can use to figure into the shot that can really help save some tricky putts on deceptive greens.
