The Lynx Parallax Thread

discussion of all Parallax irons
Not sure if this belongs in the classic category or not...

I love the original Lynx Parallax irons so much that I wanted to start a thread about them. I just received a full set 3-SW in the black finish they did with PowerTune graphite shafts. (will post pics later). I chased these up on craigslist halfway across the country because I sold two other sets I had and regretted ever since. I thought the Cleveland Quadpro's were a good replacement (yeah I like the old stuff) but not so much. I do a lot of thrift store shopping and probably could call my self a very small used club broker but had never found another set. These are by far the best irons I have ever hit and will be playing them for as long as I can see. Hit the 2 iron over 200 yards which is unheard of for me. The Golfsmith Squared Toe blades I have now will retire to the rack with the many other sets.

Anyway, I would like to start a history of these clubs, kind of pulling over from this thread:

http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/7200-anyone-play-the-early-90s-lynx-parallax-irons/

and continuing on for the record.

I've had three sets of the original flat tops all in a white cat(dot). First two, that are gone, were standard stainless with the pat pend stamped and no cat logo's anywhere.

My third set are from 90-91's with the black nitride finish and I have yet to hit them since I just got them today.

I bought mine in 1992 and have used them ever since. I have replaced the shafts twice with Dyn Gold's and still love them. I play at least 100 rounds a year and the clubs look great for being almost 20,lol. Lofts are a lot weaker than todays clubs but I'm so used to them, it doesn't matter.

I was thinking that most people like these clubs. Really the design is rather timeless as you see it in almost every club out nowadays. I am really loving the 90-91 black nitride set I picked up.

Here they are before I cleaned them:

Grips were falling apart so I put a nice white lamkin on the 3i, new Callaway grips on 4 to 9, white tour wrap golfpride on the PW and a red tour wrap on the SW.

Does anyone know what the caliper in the cirlcle means?

Ahhh . . .lynx parallax! Love them! My first real set of clubs purchased at Carl's Golfland! I was paired up with another group this summer and one player was still rocking the parallax! Brought back all kinds of memories! I remember mine was the "orange" cat. Flat?

Why did I buy them? Because Freddie Couples played them!

Great post!

I really don't mind a set of these (the Ernie/Freddy) 90s model and paired them with newer shafts like KBS Tour.
Wouldn't mind a set of 845s pat.pend. either.
Too many sets of old Pings but not enough of other classics like these.

Anyone know what the lofts were on thE 9/PW/SW. I currently game this set and just wondering if theres room anywhere to add another wedge to it?

It depends on the date of your iron set. The late 80's set--straight topline with big notch by the hosel like the black nitride set pictured up thread--had lofts for the 9i, PW & SW of 41°, 46° and 55° respectively. Those specs are from Golf Club Design, Fitting, Ateration & Repair 4th ed. by Ralph Maltby.

The 1994 Parallax irons (these have a rounded topline on the higher irons & wedges) were 9i at 44°, PW at 50° and SW again at 55°. These specs came from ironfinder.com & equip2golf.com.

Yikes, I have the 91 Parallax which I believe have those stronger lofts so Im an even weaker hitter than I thought..........Why the huge difference between PW/SW? Why such low lofts back then? I thought clubs weren't being delofted by TM and such until the 90s? A 46* is like a modern PW isnt it?

Do you have the 3/4i measurement cause now Im afraid for my hybrid choices....

I don't know for certain why the big gap exists but I *think* it's because you can't drop the loft of a sand wedge very much because then it doesn't function. Lynx had lower lofts than almost any manufacturer in the late 80's except for Mizuno and my bet? The reason was to get sales: the market was exploding, everyone wanted in and what sells sets better than "You'll hit our irons longer!!"?? And BTW that's true if you don't know about the lofts--and you notice they aren't saying anything about wedges.

Delofting clubs for sales actually goes way back, believe it started in the 50's with Hogan and MacGregor. So yes, I think Parallax irons have quote modern close quote lofts and you'll be needing a gap wedge of some sort.

The lofts for the late 1980's Parallax irons are:

1 14°

2 17°

3 20°

4 23°

5 26°

6 29°

7 33°

8 37°

9 41°

PW 46° and SW 55°

No lob wedge but they did offer one in '94.

Thanks so much for the help!! So just double checking but Im guessing this didnt change for the Nitride 1991 clubs? Yeah looks like a Gap wedge is coming.

I'm sorry, I don't have the specs for those clubs. If I had to guess, I'd say they were the same but that's probably worth what you just paid for it! ;)

The best way to know would be to get them measured, it's very quick, takes maybe 30 seconds a club.

And when you find out, can you post the lofts back here?

TIA,

So because Im still considering a gap wedge, I took my PW/SW from the set to a local store. They were shocked to see these clubs again. They measured them and got 46 for PW and 55 for SW.

They definitely want to help me as they were surprised to see those lofts on those clubs because they didnt remember them being like that, so they told me to bring my whole set in on Tuesday to make sure everything is uniform.

They then asked if they know if I knew my dad had done any bending to them, but then took that question back quickly because they doubt these clubs could be bent without breaking.

They did say though that I would have to accept a GW that wouldnt match my set being inbetween the clubs as the Lynx have a distinct look.

Didn't see any lefty iron sets, but I did play the Lynx "BoomBoom" driver for a while. Sent in the paperwork and got a free Ashworth Lynx golf shirt just like Freddys.
