rex, I've got the 67 MT set with the aluminum inserts. Was the aluminum supposed to be better or hotter than other inserts?
Memphis-

Yours is a great question for Charley Penna.

Have coveted a LH MacGregor persimmon with an Al insert for over 40 years.
Our Dad (who would have been 100 on 12/17) had a RH MacGregor model, and MT irons as well-
MacGregor clubs had the Al "firing pin" in those PTs- Eye-O-Matic 60s, and a number of Toney Penna designed MacGregors models offered firing pins. Charley has shared some of his Uncle's designs in an earlier GolfWrx thread....
MacGregor offered their MT Tourney models with Aluminum inserts in 1966 with 5 screws and butterfly soleplates. With few custom exceptions, all the LH MacGregor models had sweepback soleplates.

Still have them... the 4 and 5 woods with Al inserts from our Dads' MT Tourney set.
Aluminum firing pins , and inserts , were introduced when plastic covers were put on balls. Toney Penna never hit a range ball with his red fibre insert woods for fear of damaging the face. COR was not a factor then.

Y'all remember the greenish inserts that were irradiated......or were they yellowish (I've slept and had a few nips of whisky since then)?

some hogan magic baby. I was crunching the one on the far left in the first pic. Love it. Again I apologize for the

I got out today and hit 18 drives. 2 rounds of 9 balls, pick up, then go to another hole. It was 60 degrees here today and sunny, very light breeze in the face. Physically i'm about 80 percent right now, fighting a sore hand, but today was determined and came up with a great swing thought while over the ball, which was complete my backswing and keep a good (not quick) tempo on the way back and give it my all on the down swing and through swing. My 2nd round of swing I did pretty well, hit a few solid fades and a few hooks. I had one ball left and it was the only one that wasn't sparkly while, a sad grey tour 100 with smile on it. By far my best swing of the day and roped it into the wind with a tiny draw. I was very surprised how much that ball had left in it being probably 20+ years. It also got out there by all the others. Man I love hitting the ol' classics.

Freddie I confess I had them reshafted/whipped with S300s tipped as much as the guy could muster. They are niiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

The original apex shafts were really beat up...which is surprising with how perfect the heads were and still are.

a 5 wood in the hogans and I'm truly set with an astounding pair of persimmons.

All I need now are texan fairways instruments and maybe a delicious set of macgregors. I got 2-3 drivers..but fairway woods
i'm finding really hard to find.

May have some Hogan 5-woods lurking in the basement and still owe you a Hogan / MacGregor vintage wedge check. Gonna be fun next time out at Bethpage!

Found a genuine TA Macgregor 4 wood last summer here in NJ (thrift shop) for $4. Would have bought a 2-PW set of tourney customs with Babe Lichardus (NJ club pro) name but set was missing the 8i. Question: I hit a few range balls with the 4w, but am hesitant to hit a bucket with this beauty. Can you hit range balls with persimmon? What are the soft ball brands you folks use? Back in the day, when I played persimmon, I almost always played the 'plastic balls'- the surlyns and didn't crack any heads on the course or at the range. I was a 7-9 then, not a super hard swinger. Thanks for any info!

If the whipping is properly applied followed by clear lacquer coats the head should hold up, as long as you don't hit it on the neck. The insert could chip if you don' t keep a cover on the wood and allow it to bang against the irons. Do not use any tee that is not made of wood.

Shots hit off the toe are also potential club wrecker. So that coupled with Charley's post, you should be fine, as long as you pure it. Nothin beats the sound of a well struck persimmon. I hate to sound like a heratic, but, for four bucks, if you break it, so what. Better than letting it rust away at Goodwill.
