My New Custom Sunset Beach Long Slant Proto

Recommended Posts

1st one he's done and LaMont hit a home run!
I was always a Cameron guy and over the years have had more putters than I can count pass through my hands. I have gamed all sorts of styles and head shapes, but could never find one that I truly liked. It was always a compromise between one feature or another. I finally decided enough of settling for OTR, it was time I got something custom made to what I want. I searched on here and looked at the various companies and decided to go with Sunset Beach and their Ocean Isle model (always been a fan of the Newport). I wanted to make sure though, that the neck I wanted would be possible. I love the look of a Long Slant (Del Mar Long Slant was my go to gamer) but had never been able to find a Long Slant Newport without an insert (other than a $$$ tour). La Mont told me they had never done one, but he thought he could make it happen. He was right!

LaMont is a great guy to work with. He kept me informed through the process and we traded a lot of texts and emails making sure everything was just right. I love the way it turned out and can't wait to get it out on the course! I wanted some sort of "shout-out" to LaMont on the putter which is why I chose "Krafted" (like MannKrafted) on the sole. Deep milled face, weight comes in at 346g (right where I wanted it), my initials in snow in the cavity, sound slot cut into the face and that awesome custom neck. I really liked the way light blue looked on black when LaMont first posted pics of the new Ocean Isle heads which is why I had him replicate the color scheme on mine. Topped it off with an Iomic Absolute grip and dark shaft and I am in heaven.

Last thing before pics, when I got home the box was busted (see pic), heart stopped for a minute but everything was okay.

Thanks again to LaMont and Chris for making this one happen! If you are looking for a custom putter, give these guys a call! Prices are great and customer service is awesome!

Now for the pics! I have a few showing the stages of creating the neck and then the finished product. The creation pics aren't the actual head, LaMont used other heads for the illustration.

Very nice! I have an okracoke no sightline raw finish that has been the best putter for me in a long time. I did have a hard time getting response back from ssb about a question I had...so glad to read you had a good experience. Also, absolute BS USPS would deliver a box in that condition, and they designed the box! No wonder they lost 5B last year.

Now THAT's what I'm talking about! How many guys in the putter business COULD do that for you, then the number of guys who WOULD do that for you is about 1/4 of that number.
Love this trend of putter guys going the extra distance to take care of the small guy who loves the game and doesn't have huge money for "TOUR" stuff.
Is this SSB's black polymer or black oxide? Looks to be a polymer, but not 100% sure.
Thanks for sharing pictures.

How nice it is to get something the way you want it. And they seem like great guys. Great color scheme. Enjoy!

Thanks guys!

This is their Black Polymer finish. Very low maintenance. Got a chance to take this one to the practice green this weekend and I am in love. The feel is soft yet solid and it is weighted just right for my stroke. I love this thing!

Goose. I have been going back over the pictures and you have me stumped. The first black one says SSB on it and yours does, too. Looking at the one in the middle, it looks like a similar style, but no cavity stamping, at all. I love the look of that one with the flatter bumpers and really love it with the handmade neck on it. What the heck is it? Does SSB have a new headstyle coming out that they have not shared, just yet?
If you know, please share.

Nick,

The silver putter is actually a MannKrafted Rattler I believe. LaMont wanted me to see how the neck looked once it had been finished.

Thanks for that info, Goose. A quick google search on that one got me some very cool pix and a little info on MannKrafted. Time for me to do some deeper digging. I am liking the fact that it is handmade and from what I see, he can do a few variations of that look.
I'll report back what I find, but will not threadjack this one.

The Post Office's budget issues have nothing to do with poor service. The merchandise inside was fine, so it looks scary but it turned out to be a non-issue.

I won't say anything else here (not on topic and too political) but you may want to check it out. Personally, I don't want to have to send mail via UPS or FedEx at their prices. I actually think the USPS does a great job (having lived overseas for a bit my opinion is that we don't realize how good we have it)

That said, that putter looks GREAT... I have had LaMont do some custom work for me and the quality was beyond reproach - well worth the price. Nice to see his putters exhibit the same quality.

Nice man! I just got my SSB a couple weeks ago. What do you think of the feel on the polymer? I got it on mine as well, just curious what you thought.

I have the black oxide finish on my custom Masonboro. It's very durable, but the ball feels great off of the face.

To echo the sentiments above, LaMont is great to work with.

I know we have many great members here. Most of us don't know each other or our personalities beyond our writing ability. I realize the postal service has bigger problems on top of damage to packages. I have shipped exclusively with usps the past several years. They are both close in proximity and efficient for what they charge. When my ssb arrived the box was in worse shape than OP's pic. I was stunned and demoralized. I was simply remembering the latest news about heavy losses @ usps and rates going up in January.

Sort of Off-Topic, but the issue of box strength is being addressed by SSB. New, stronger boxes have been suggested by the party responsible for shipping and I believe that the corporate headquarters is beginning to hear that cry.
For those of you who know the "corporate structure" at SSB, I hope you have a grin on your face. :drinks:
Have an amazing weekend, what is left of it.
